50 Cent: Beyonce Made Jay-Z Famous

From Contact Music: "50 Cent has taken a sly swipe at rap rival Jay-Z, insisting the '99 Problems' hitmaker was a 'no one' until he wed Beyonce Knowles. Superstar Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, wed the Bootylicious beauty in April, and 50 Cent claims it was their union - not the rap mogul's music - that raised his profile on the international scene. He says, 'I'm a big fan of Jay-Z, but outside of the states and hip-hop circles, no one really knew who he was until he married Beyonce.' The 'In Da Club' rapper has also disputed reports that Jay-Z is worth an estimated $1 billion, but is adamant he's not jealous of his fortune. He adds, 'I don't believe he's worth that much! It's all been exaggerated. I'm comfortable. I don't want for anything so I'm not in a race.'"

What 50 really means:

"I wish I was relevant on my own instead of have to attach myself to middle school like dramas."

50 is such a bloody hater, I'm Nigerian and I knew who Jay was before Beyonce.

50 reminds me of these young birds that hang out on the block all day. Always running off at the mouth when no one asked his opinion. If no one knew who Jay-Z was before marrying Beyonce then how was he able to sell out Madison Square Garden (First hip hop artist to do that), and almost every concert he has been in since.

A grown man who calls himself "50 Cent" should not take swipes at anyone.

What Michelle said.

Jay Z was famous when Beyonce was in elementary school.

OT:

Has it ever been explained why it's "50 Cent" and not "50 Cents"?

I so hope that there is an explanation beyond a lack of basic language/grammar skills.

50 Cent has by far the most glaring inferiority complex of any mainstream rapper out there.

@ Dee - because either can be considered correct.

Our Living Language : The plural of cent is cent in some varieties of vernacular Southern English when preceded by a numeral: That costs eighty cent. The lack of the plural suffix -s in such constructions is also found with units of measurement like foot and pound.

Thanks DI-MY-E. Most interesting!

By virtue of being born and raised in rural Alabama I'm quite familiar with "varieties" of "vernacular Southern English". :)

I can't say that I recall hearing cent used as a plural when preceded by a numeral. I’m familiar with usage such as "a 50-cent piece" or "a 99-cent reduction", but those usages are singular. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything similar to "May I borrow 15 cent?" or "This is only 79 cent."

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen - I'm just saying that it has not been my experience. Perhaps this usage is peculiar to only certain regions of the South.

Anyway, thanks again. Maybe I’ll do a little research.

I'm from rural Georgia, and for most of my life I heard (and said) "cent" without the "s" almost exclusively.

The explanation would work for me if he was from the south instead of New York. My family is from the South and I've never said "15 cent" (I grew up in the Midwest)although my family members who still live there might. Interesting. Anyhoo, I'm going to Ace Hardware for some sturdy tape for 50 Cent's mouth. Every time he opens it, something stupid and pathetic falls out. He needs a telethon for his ego. It's sad.

It is actually some truth to what 50 Cent said. He was not downing Jay Z. He was pointing out the fact that Jay Z was only known within the Hip Hop community and not mainstream until he started dating Beyonce.

It is true. My mother is 51. She only knew Jay Z b/c he dated Beyonce. That is what 50 Cent is saying. He saying that Jay Z would have never been invited to the The Academy Awards (OSCARS) if he were not dating Beyonce at the time. Jay Z would not be friends with Gwyneth Paltrow if he were not dating Beyonce. He would have not been invited to the Royal Palace in Britain if he were not dating Beyonce (Prince William likes Beyonce). That is what 50 Cent is saying.

50 Cent is not trying to diss Jay Z. He is just giving you all a little perspective on how Jay Z became an "A-LIST" celebrity. Beyonce HELPED MAKE HIM ONE.
