IN OTHER ENDORSEMENT NEWS Toni Morrison, who, inadvertently I hope, launched what would become the long-lasting "Bill Clinton is the first black president" ridiculousness, has thrown her hat into the endorsement ring by sending a rather poetic letter of support to Obama's camp.
"In addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates," Morrison wrote. "That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom. It is too bad if we associate it only with gray hair and old age. Or if we call searing vision naivete. Or if we believe cunning is insight. Or if we settle for finessing cures tailored for each ravaged tree in the forest while ignoring the poisonous landscape that feeds and surrounds it.
"Wisdom is a gift; you can't train for it, inherit it, learn it in a class, or earn it in the workplace — that access can foster the acquisition of knowledge, but not wisdom," Morrison wrote.
Too bad half the people supporting him won't understand the letter.
Yuck.
Why do you think she went so 'ga ga' over him? This is so interesting to see ho it will all pan out….
Power rules huh?
That was an eloquent and beautiful letter from a truly great writer.
This will be a great week for Obama. I hope he savors it while it lasts.
I think Obama is cute. Still not sure who I am voting for though.
Very nice. He's got a nice group of decent human beings endorsing him. Then again, can a Toni Morrison endorsement rival that of a Bob Johnson endorsement? Pulitzer Prize winning Ivy League professor vs. black stereotype proprietor — hmmm.
Now is Hill gonna recommend that Obama reject support from T. Morrison as she's done before with D. Geffen & the NV unions?
I read the paragraph from her column where she noted Clinton as "The Black President." It was badly cherry-picked.
How much does a celebrity endorsement matter? Maya Angelou endorsed Hillary Clinton. Do we think that mattered to voters at all? Will this?
It shouldn't matter but for some it does. Bob Johnson, Charles Rangel, and Andrew Young endorse Hillary & they're not great people.
Silly people care. If the endorsement of a writer or poet matter to you, then well…I don't have to finish that, do I? I'd like to think the electorate can make up their minds absent endorsements by newspapers, celebrities or other politicians. I love Al Gore, but if he endorsed Obama - it wouldn't matter to me - I'd still vote Hillary. She has MY endorsement and, frankly, that's all that should matter. Verdad?
Haha! You're WHITE, BMD. You're a white operative for HRC.
There is pretty much nothing that you could say that could convince me otherwise. You are white. Explains a LOT.
Ok then.
Billie, you are getting on my last nerve. If you can't add something useful, why bother?
You are exactly right, bmd. The people who care about which celebrity endorses which candidate aren't the people who should be in charge anyway.
Billie - are you serious? I'm white b/c I'm voting for Hillary? Hate to disappoint you, baby, but I'm black, sweet black. Damn, is it that hard to believe that I just have a different opinion, homie? That explains A LOT ABOUT YOU, my dear.
