STATE OF EMERGENCY IS RIGHT Bill Cosby, the increasingly un-lovable curmudgeon who has dedicated his latter years to grouchily attempting to uplift the race, is releasing a rap album called State of Emergency. According to All Hip Hop, "Cosby's album will not contain any profane language, nor will it offer any denigrating comments towards women." But what will it offer, exactly? No word on whether the album will feature songs by (positive, of course) rappers or the lyrical stylings of Cosby himself.

there is something very staged and phony about his career as social critic of the last few years. he seems little more that mouthpiece for someone else.

sc, he has a PhD in Education. I doubt it. there are a lot of older people who say the same thing but don't have the money or media attention to do anything. his heart's in the right place. the tactics will likely prove ineffective. he's not getting the age gap and that things that worked 60 or so years ago (preaching and criticizing) haven't worked for a while now and they certainly don't work for large groups of people. hell, that's how i was raised. if my memaw or grandpa made me feel bad enough (mostly memaw) and preached, i'd change. it's also a different culture.

I'm shocked that All Hip Hop felt they needed to add that line about the lack of profanity and denigrating comments. This is Bill Cosby, after all. Cosby was just on David Letterman's show the other night, and I heard the same old comedian I'd heard before. Not the "social critic" or phony that sc sees. Did All Hip Hop use that same description when professor Cornel West announced he was recording a rap album, too?

Hey Lauren, looking forward to our NPR appearance next week. But I'm saddened by your thoughts on Cosby as well as some of your commenters. It appears that the truth is unattractive to some people. Fitty and TI speak to the Black community in their own fashion and yet they appear to be getting a pass but Dr. Cosby is called a curmudgeon?
Some of us know deep down what Cosby is saying is truthful as our stats are in the toilet when compared to how things were 50 years ago-when there was no societal access (or internet access for that matter) back then. Where is the vaunted Black strength that we are all supposed to have? We can't take constructive criticism anymore? Or is being called a nig* or B*th the operative way of expressing ourselves? Come on, people!

I agree with dBURT, silly HATERS. I am a Columbia student and was privy to see Dr. Cosby on Feb. 1st. For those of you who don't pay attention to anything that's not in the HBCU community.

The fight to save our communities is taking place at the IVY Leagues. In my whole Grad Program there are 2 black men. You guys are talking about fiddy whomever, who gives a damn. Them dudes don't own shit, and without education they can't make and affect policy that affects the kids. Get off your asses and start showing Cosby love.

I don't agree with what he was saying but i agree with him saying the right things about values in our community. We had the chance before in the 1990's and now we have turned our beloved hip hop into ringtone, superman shouting ass kids
