IN THE SPIRIT OF APARTHEID Black students at the ironically-named Free State University in South Africa are protesting on campus after a video, shot in September, surfaced showing white students feeding black housekeepers at their residence hall urine stew.
In one scene from the video, a student mixes what looks like a beef stew in a plastic bowl and adds garlic and other items. Then he tells the camera he will add the "special ingredient."
The student then urinates into the mixture, which he later stirs up and puts in a microwave. Other students can be heard laughing on the tape.
The next scene shows a different student urging at least three housekeepers to drink cups full of the stew, saying, "This is our dorm's 'Fear Factor.' We want to see who has the best 'Fear Factor.'"
The students staged the video to protest the university's attempt to integrate the residence halls. [CNN]
Is it racist or just a stupid fucking joke?
Considering the video was the white students' way of protesting the idea of sharing their living quarters with black students, I would go out on a limb and say racist.
Oh…yea…didn't read that part. Ha!
If it's not recognized and acknowledged, then you can't change it.
South Africa remains a country under Apartheid.
Black faces in the government means nothing. Cape Town is run by Whites (Mayor and most of the council, Commerce, Military and finance).
Blacks still live in the slums of Soweto and other slums with no running water and electricity unless they seal it from powerlines nearby.
Thinks have change very little for the average black South African, but for the Indian and Lebanese population it's boom town now that the Browns are considered equal with the Whites.
South Africa aka "White Africa." Though there has been change, much is still the same. Blacks are still struggling, racism is still prevalent, and the foreigners are still the wealthiest people there. All it's wealth is built on the back of the natives who still see the least of the profits. Mining companies like "DeBeers" and "Anglo-American" (yes… that's a real company name), rape the land of it's resources and make profits for themselves. Yet Oprah loves to praise it and call it "her home."
Truthteller:
How can you say tat SA remains a country under apartheid? I'd like to remind you that the black government(ANC) has been in power for 14 years!! And therefore council, commerce, military and finance have all been under the same rule.
Major projects are underway to provide housing for the poor and previously disadvantaged, and in economic terms, life is way better for the average south african!
We have affirmitave action, black economic empowerment and all sorts of rules and regulations that are aimed at providing a better way of life for previously disadvantaged groups.
South Africa is a changing country with a lot of potential, and to say that the country is still under the rule of apartheid because of what 4 stupid boys in the free state did is an absolute outrage. Maybe you should make a trip to SA and see what is happening for yourself.
Gerhardus:
Is there a White area and a Black area there?
Has the wealth and privileges been shared with the Blacks?
Are the sports yet integrated/reflect the population?
Are there places in SA that Blacks cannot go without being picked up by the police?
Are the vast majority of Blacks still in poverty?
Are the Browns (Arabs and Indians) still being treated better that Blacks?
Are the Whites still the majority of Judges?
Do the Whites still hold positions of power in the military and Police?
If you answer to the above is no, then I need to apologize.
^^^I'm sorry, with the exception of the obvious one, for a minute I thought you were talking about America.
Truthteller:
1.No (Anyone can decide to live anywhere they please, as is the case when a country is in democracy)
2.Yes.There are more rich black people in south africa than whites (this group has also been termed the black elite). It is also interesting to note that the black elite do not share their wealth with any under priveliged groups (white or black)
3.Yes. In hockey there are quotas that half the international team has to be black. The argument against this is that you cannot impose quotas on an international team, but the goverment should rather integrate sports at a school level.
4.No. The majority of the police is black anyway
5. The vast majority of blacks are still in poverty, yes. This was mostly the fault of apartheid. However if you read my previous post you will see that I mentioned the black goverment being in power for 14 years. Any majority poverty going forwards is in the hands of the new goverment. How can your argument be that after 14 years of democracy the country is still under apartheid rule if it is the responsibilty of the new government to alleviate this?
6.I cannot comment on this as I have never heard of the ridiculous situation where an arab or indian has been treated better than a black person in the past 14 years of democracy.
7.NoJudges? If you mean to ask if our judicial system is mainly white, the answer is definitely not.
8.NoPositions of power in the military and police are determined by the government. As you might know the government (ANC) is majority black. The position of power is held by Jackie Selebi. Go and read up on his corruption case. The same soes for military.
Your reply just goes to show how dangerous it is when someone reports on matters that they just do not understand. This is especially true for the media who are blowing this racist video out of all proportions.
For example, did you read in your newspapers or watch a report on cnn that showed how a white man was murdered in front of his family in Pretoria by black robbers. Did you read about the incident where a white unarmed girl was shot 9 times before the black robbers fleed with cellphones? Did you read about white mother who was shot and killed in front of her sons in Pretoria. All of these incidents happened in the same month!!!
Do these incidents not deserve the hype that the racist video is receiving?? I'll tell you why they don't get the attention they deserve…
Racism in this country is defined as something that a white person does to wrong a black person and not vica versa.. Vica versa it is just an isolated incident.
Well stated argument Gerhardus. No wonder there is such an Exodus of white people from Africa.
