Jeez.

Between this jump and the overrepresentation of black women among the number of new AIDS cases, you kinda have to assume that there is some cultural stigma among black folks to use condoms.

(And clearly, people don't know their HIV status.)

G.D.

I was about to mention the same thing. These research reports make it seem as though black people are just doomed. Heart disease, STD's, AIDS, HIV, diabetes, prison, I don't have the time to keep listing all the bad stuff.

I'm sure some of the 25% are "virgins" who felt unprotected anal sex was a better choice than vaginal.

souldecirce, unfortunately, most teens get one talk from their parents though they receive messages about sex EVERY SINGLE DAY from their friends, the media and dubious online sources. My sex talk was at the age of 12 when I didn't even know why people would want to have sex. Everything else came from school (comprehensive, thank goodness), friends, boys, dial-up internet porn and the media. If anything, I'd prefer that parents not talk about it rather than spread paranoia or misinformation. The problem with church and sex ed is that most churches are against premarital sex. Like parents, many believe that teaching about it is basically encouraging it. Obviously, dying people won't really change their attitudes. Look at the countries with the highest HIV/AIDS rates and deaths. Their churches don't address it either.

And 80% rise?!?! The GLBT community is really the only one that seems to regularly acknowledge the fact that AIDS still exists while heterosexuals have returned to free love era behaviors. I'm completely shocked and saddnened.

No, it's not necessarily abstinence-only…these people may have, in fact, been using condoms!

"The development of microbicides against HIV was sparked by the discovery that a long-used spermicide gel called nonoxynol-9, still used in many brands of condom, destroyed the HIV virus in a test tube. But subsequent clinical studies found that rather than protect against infection, the gel made it worse. 'It caused local inflammation, which recruited HIV host cells [immune cells] to the area and exacerbated transmission of the virus,' explains Hoseley.
