Even ESPN, our nation's leading exploiter of young black men, thinks this month's Vogue cover is a little odd:
A black athlete being reduced to a savage is, sadly, nothing new. … LeBron is just the third male ever to appear on Vogue's cover, but it's hard to believe Vogue would have made Brett Favre, Steve Nash or even David Beckham strike his best beast pose. And even if Vogue had, it wouldn't carry the same racial undertones as having a fear-inducing black man paired with a dainty damsel. Too often, black athletes are presented as angry, overly aggressive and overly sexual. Or sometimes, they're just plain emasculated.
…and LeBron, being young and simple minded, went along with it. Has anyone gotten his reaction to his portrayal on the cover–or does he even care?
Hopefully, Lebron will learn from this — but I kind of doubt it. It's just an awful, awful, hurtful cover. His image will suffer for a minute and he'll be ont the defensive. The fallout is bigger than I thought it would be. He will respond eventually — he'll have to…no one likes the cover.
All I want to know is why Gisele is smiling?
Giselle is smiling because she just got another Vogue cover, and all she had to do is pose with an dumb ape/black man.
You know she was salty about sharing the cover. I'm sure she requested that they put the ape on the inner flap
Why does Vogue like to put black people on the cover with their mouths open?
They both look crazy!!! And by the way, what's so great about the Vogue mag? Have your read it?! It's terrible!! So overrated. Nothing in at all that is useful.
It's endearing that some people see nothing offensive about this picture. If you ignore racism and/or ignorance it doesn't exist, right? WRONG.
There is nothing right about that picture. The more I see it, the more offended I get. The more embarrassed I am. The more I recognize that the media continues to perpetuate images of a black man looking beastly. Ignore that if you want, but it's pretty blatent to me.
