It’s the slept-on Times piece I can’t stop telling people about. A Dublin-born woman named Caroline Duggan has started an Irish dance troupe at PS 59 in the South Bronx, a school where 98 percent of the population is black or Hispanic. The kids, most of whom were attuned only to hip hop dancing or the merengue prior to Duggan’s arrival, absolutely love it.
I love the story. Is it because it’s yet another piece of evidence proving cultural norms can be transcended and reworked? Perhaps in part, but it’s also because the kids are so damn cute.

this is too funny!
Congratulations to the children, I understand they have been embraced and celebrated in Ireland.
Far too many people attach culture with skin color.
Culture is simply a matter of where you grew up/what parents impart.
The problem with culture is that it isn’t flexible, people demand that you act/speak/live a certain way and frown on deviations so the individual spirit is diminished, and when you deviate such as interracial marriage/religion/choice of friends, there is the societal guilt factor, coming from your cultural peers.
Culture is so overrated, we no longer live in little hamlets cut off from the world, it’s time we promote “Human Culture” above all.
Africa birthplace of mankind…i dont think so…say hello to your DADDY!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH…I KNEW IT!

Kilo, I think you need to read your article a little more carefully.
It’s really saying that mankind emerged from Africa earlier than first thought.
But I am sure you knew this.
NO,NO,NO…read carfully!
Nice try though!
how could homeskillet not even read the article?
Sorry KILO, I suffer fools only one reply, no more.
That makes two.
This is an exerpt from your article, Kilo:
“This leads us to a very important, very interesting conclusion,” Carbonell said. It is this: that hominins which emerged from Africa and settled in the Caucasus eventually evolved into Homo antecessor, and that the latter populated Europe not 800,000 years ago, but at least 1.3 million years ago.
I guess you need to read more “carefully”!
I want to know how you talk black and Latino kids into doing dances that involve absolutely no hip or upper body movement? It is the least funky form of dancing, ever!

Speak on it, Truth! Great response and you said it better than I ever could.
Thanks BMD, I did kinda go wild didn’t I?
No, not at all. I think that’s probably the best thing I’ve read on this blog. Of course the idea of culture being so inflexible in the minds of so many is something that I SMH at everyday. Do you know how often I get ‘but you’re black, you can’t say that or think that’ and I think to myself REALLY, SAYS WHO?????
that is so kick ass and awesomely rad!!! *LOL*
It’s about that time to ban KILO.
