Monday night a friend and I were asked to leave a bar on Manhattan's West Side for talking too loudly about race. Ludicrous, no? I mean, it was midnight, we weren't yelling, I had just paid nine dollars for a whiskey and everyone in there was at least 21. Oh, and THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!!!
that's wrong. i've been in all kinds of bars and restaurants talking with my friends about everything from race to our sex lives and while even i've felt uncomfortable sometimes, no one's ever asked us to leave.
everyone has a mouth, and the 1st amendment gives everyone a right to use theirs. you fight words with words, combat ideas with ideas. that could have been an opportunity to start dialogue rather than crush it.
that bar on Manhattan's West Side might have lost a couple of people [and possibly their entire network of friends] as customers. i mean, why go out and drink if someone's going to come along and keep you from speaking your mind?
I'm pretty sure your last sentence just answered the question, Cord.
I had to read this shit twice cause I couldn't believe it. WTF?
So happy I live in Europe.
you should out the bar.
Gross.
what gossipjunkie said.
The first Amendment does not override domain discretion, even if its a retail institution.
An employee or a customer's is subject to the ownership of the domain, (so say the supreme Court) it is well within their rights to ask anyone to leave as long as it's not on the basis of race creed or gender.
Clientele/customers discomfort is reason enough for the manager to exercise his rights.
Personally if the next table is drowning out my table quiet conversation, I would complain or leave.
not arguing with the legality of Cord being tossed on his arse. curious about the place that has such an atmosphere–as in want to avoid said place.
How loud do you have to be in a bar to disturb other people? Unless it's one of those really quiet bars…maybe.
Soul, I too am sorry that it happened to Cord, but
remember your rights end where my nose begins.
I have had problems of strangers trying to enter my table debates, which in itself can be annoying, but even when they make an ass of themselves I don't toss them on their arse.
Wow, that's terrible. Do they ask people telling dirty jokes to leave? This is why I frequent dives where the management has no such standards for conversation!
Cord, unless you're "talking too loudly about race" consisted of your jumping on the bar, cocking and locking your gun, and screaming that you and your friend were going to mow down Whitey….mmmm, not feeling their throwing y'all out. I'm with pez, souldecirce, and gossipjunkie: gross, and you should out them.
