Eh, the source that apparently claims this is The Sun - not a well respected entertainment source. They didn't even cite what magazine she was quoted from…
I don't think she's wrong. If the CIA is willing to blanket black neighborhoods with crack, their support of violence and dehumanization is not too far flung at all.
Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb (from the San Jose Mercury News) wrote about the crack/CIA connection, which initiated a congressional investigation.
Senator John Kerry (D-MA), Chairman of that sub-Committee, had this to say about the recent allegations raised by Mr. Webb and others, “There is no question in my mind that people affiliated with, or on the payroll of the CIA were involved in drug trafficking while involved in support of the Contras, but it is also important to note that we never found any evidence to suggest that these traffickers ever targeted any one geographic area or population group.
The CIA has denied an accusation that was never made. What they have not denied is that men working for the CIA-run army were selling vast quantities of cocaine to American citizens and using some of the drug profits to arm and equip that army. The CIA has also not denied that the drug dealers were meeting with CIA-paid commanders during this time and getting fundraising requests from them.”
The CIA and its contra-drug connection was the #2 Censored story of 1987 as cited by Project Censored at Sonoma State University.
They reported that despite nearly a decade of charges about the CIA and its contra drug smuggling connection, the mainstream media did not put the issue on the national agenda … until the San Jose Mercury News published its extraordinary three-part series starting August 18, 1996.
The US government has killed, lied and conspired to steal from and harm the weak. However they didn't "invent" gangster rap. Gangs have been around for a century (actually longer) and gang life was a brutal reality for many young men so it's logical that they would end up rapping about it. I love Alicia, but it sounds like she made the mistake that lots of people make….regurgitating something she has heard someone else say w/o knowing what the hell she is talking about.
The government is responsible for a lot of things. But personal responsibility has to come in somewhere. Rappers choose to sell their artistic integrity for money, the can chose not to be Coons and Sambos, but they choose to do so.
Blasphemy, I say! Losing a crush on Alicia!? Never…
I think that anyone with a knowledge of the history of the US government's relationship with the development of the Black community should at least lend an ear to things like this. Don't think she's right, but let's just say if some evidence was uncovered I wouldn't be shocked. This guy's opinion I pretty much share:
She must've been joking. It's not that they created it, they just allow and promote it to make money. Just like the cocaine industry. Also, did u know that since we've entered Afghanistan, it now produces 80% of the world's heroine supply? When the taliban were still in control, they banned the growth of opium, but now that we're there….. it's back in business.
Watch "The Origin of AIDS" and "American Drug War: The Last White Hope." Both are great and informative documentaries.
say it isn't so!
I was shocked too. She's normally bright. She's reading way too much into that Black Panther lit.

After reading Snoop's assertion that the KKK donate money to Barack Obama, this seems positively sane in comparison.
@ aries304,
She allegedly said this in Blender. SHe shocked her moms with the AK-47 necklace.

I love Alicia & she may have a point but it's not because she's a fellow soror. Skee-wee!

While I don't agree with her, I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out right.
I wrote how I felt about Alicia's faux pas on my blog. Here's the link: http://afro-americawriter.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2D30651C10302D91!421.entry
