MUGABE'S WHITE REFUGEES BRING PROSPERITY TO NIGERIA "Musa Mogadi says he is better off since 'the whites' came. He's got a new job, learned new farming skills, and he can chat on a mobile phone while zipping around the countryside on a motorbike. Three years ago, Mr. Mogadi got by as a subsistence farmer. But he now earns a regular wage as a supervisor on one of this town's new commercial farms. He's applied skills he learned from some of the two dozen white Zimbabwean farmers who moved to Nigeria in 2005, after being kicked off their land by President Robert Mugabe and later attracted by large parcels of land on offer under 25-year leases and commitments of support from the Nigerian government."

Good for them and the people in the area. I hope that's government land they're renting, not someone else's who got kicked out for whitey. The Nigerian government is not exactly known for its kosher deals.

I guess one afrikan's rejected neo-colonial oppressor is another afrikan's accepted neo-colonial oppressor. It's SO good to be white. I guess you partially understand what I'm saying, Mr Jefferson.

Oh God! To be honest, this can be a good or bad thing. Good becuz the natives can learn some new skills from the foreigners, as well as the fact that money is actually being invested in Nigeria and bad becuz the Nigerian government (like Daria said) is known for screwing it's people and taking part in bad business deals.

The point of this ridiculously one sided/transparent article, is that whites have brought a bit of civilization to nigerians.

Got it…thanks.

@ solitaire: I think the point is that Mugabe is a racist and an idiot.

@ reservoirgod: What makes these farmers especially oppressive? Yes, they're the *descendants* of colonizers, but they're also Zimbabweans, born and raised. I guess from a labor-relations standpoint they do represent capital, and their employees are labor, but whoever takes over their farms in Zimbabwe (Mugabe cronies, one would imagine) will likely be just as bad a boss as any of them ever were. Surely you're not saying that the full-fledged, native-born citizens of a country ought to have fewer rights or be treated worse just because they are ethnically different than the majority.

My issue is that the Nigerian gov't did not do this (help vitalize/revitalize the area) for them.

I just hope that the farmers are actually learning and maybe even planning to take over the farms (or get their own) eventually with the new knowledge.

I hope they will not be satisfied with reaching a plateau and get complacent because they can now get motorbikes and cell phones. The Zimbabweans will be okay. Obviously they have enough $$ and know-how to get other farms/land.
