LLOYD'S OF LONDON SUED OVER SLAVERY "Descendants of black American slaves have accused the Lloyd’s of London insurance market and two United States companies of profiting from the slave trade in a lawsuit seeking billions of pounds in damages. The suit, filed in Manhattan’s federal court, seeks just over £1 billion in punitive damages from Lloyd’s, tobacco firm RJ Reynolds and banking group FleetBoston. The suit also seeks unspecified actual damages. Filed on behalf of six adults and two children, the suit alleges the companies intentionally sought to destroy the plaintiffs’ 'people, culture, religion and heritage'. Lawyers for the eight plaintiffs said the complaint - unlike past lawsuits seeking reparations for slavery - was the first to use DNA to link the plaintiffs to Africans who suffered atrocities during the slave trade."

I am very cuirious about this. If they win and famlies are award monies, I wonder what this will mean to all of the compaines who profitted from slavery.

Dutch West India company we are looking at you.

Will we get some type of reparations?
How will the monies be disperased(sp)?
Who is entitled?
What about people who are only 1/4 or 1/8 black, will they benefit?

I would like my student loans paid off, a house and a trip to West Africa.

They need to get those anti-tobacco lawyers and have a class-action suit. People laughed when that started and we all know they tore those very competent tobacco industry lawyers up in court.

I'm not getting a red cent so I probably shouldn't even care at all. I'm pretty much FOB (Fresh Off the BritishAirways).

Badass! I'm very curious to see how this will play out. This seems like baby steps in the right direction but only time will tell. Either way it's history in the making.

@Chic Noir - I like your requested benefits package. I will have the same! However, I would like to add burial stones for the many unnamed (and unknown) ancestors who's struggles are certainly much appreciated.

@daria from Gorgeous Black Women - I wouldn't mark yourself down for the count just yet. I think some retribution is also in order for European nations that ravaged and stole from the African continent as well.

Well, those companies are now raping the continent with the consent of our greedy black "leaders."

There's a reason London and Paris look so nice, and why the UK and France are so well developed economically to this day. And it has something to do with the fact that black people's names, if not African, tend overwhelmingly to be English or French…

These are all excellent points. There's no way a U.S.-based lawsuit will go anywhere — there have been other reparations lawsuits in the U.S. in the last few years, going as high as the U.S. Supreme Court, and they've been rejected as having no *legal* merit — but this may help political efforts to advance the pending U.S. legislation on slavery reparations.

Very true daria. Those "leaders" definitely should not be exempt from said retribution. I've got my eye on China too Chic Noir.
