Porny clothier American Apparel is now hawking goods printed with an ethnic design the company calls "Afrika." Perhaps unsurprisingly, AA has not used a single black model to help advertise the new print, despite the fact that it's all over their Web site in dresses, leggings, bras and headbands.
is this an issue, really? must be a slow news day to be up in arms about some cheap, ugly ass crap from american apparel.
ok?
Why do they have to use a black model, you would have probably called racism if they did. Not all blacks are from Africa and how do you that white model is not African. (points to Charlize Theron)
@ *M*
HA! Yes, I would have "called racism" had they used a black model. Indeed.
Um, knowing what I’ve know about American Apparel Models-thanks to that Jane article a while back-I'm glad we aren't reppin' the line in the ads.
Oh, yes Schanina. That owner is a pervert.
I don't really mind. I think it's even better the models were white. Hopefully African prints/designs will become more mainstream.
I want to wear more African prints but when I buy them I want them to be authentic, not from some European designer who thinks of it as a fad.
@schanina- I read that article and the guy is a real perv. At the same time his employees are paid decent wages compared to and he makes the clothes here in America.
@M-I agree with you but I also think it would be nice if there was a blk model or two rocking the prints.
I don't want them to use black models in their porn-inspired ads.
If you want to wear more African inspired clothes, go buy some material and find a tailor. There are some newer designers like Boxing Kitten who use the authentic material with timeless cuts like Boxing Kitten http://entertainment.glam.com/.....+Celebrity
…and anyone with additional tips, please share as I'm sick of altering the stuff my mommy makes me. She is under the false impression that I have sizable breasts.
Jeez. I hate AA, but I thought that they had ethnically diverse models. I found three (partially?) black females on their site. Which… this may be wrong… but I wouldn't call them racist for that… three isn't too bad… but no black models for the Afrika line?! That's indefensible.
At least they hire a lot of Asian models, which most places totally neglect. And they hire girls that the men I know would think are "ugly and manly." Like: http://store.americanapparel.ca/m434w.html?cid=6
PS
I know AA objectifies women or whatever… but I like how they make unconventionally pretty women more sought-after sexually. And I like that the models rarely wear make-up in arousing pictures. It's kind of reinventing sexy.
STILL HATE AA.
Ilnazhad and Chic Noir sum up my mixed feelings on AA completely. I may have even let Dov Muttonchops Charney get away with the 'Criminal' video-style ads if he wasn't notorious for sexually harrassing his female employees. I know black models need jobs, but I'm not sorry that they're not a part of this campaign.
Check out Maroon 21, started up by two graphic designers. It's a street wear line, but I'm sure they have some feminine pics for the ladies. Started up by a Nigerian and a haitian guy. But african prints are all the rage in street fashion now, it was only a matter of time a corp clothing line would catch on to the 'hipness'.
Maybe they couldn't fine aleast one young African American model, or maybe they met to call it the safari look (old Banana Republic style) instead of Afrika
