Al Sharpton Aims To Shut Down Yankee Stadium

mlb.jpgAs if most New Yorkers don't already hate Al Sharpton enough, he's planning on another Sean Bell protest — the last one blocked the city's bridges and messed up traffic — during the MLB All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. New Yorkers might be used to horrible traffic, but, seriously, don't mess with their baseball. Sharpton & Co. say the protest will go as planned unless there is some move to pass legislation to curb police violence.

"We have plans to do the same at the All-Star Game," Sharpton said. "We will seriously consider suspending our civil disobedience if we can see some legislative action."

The legislation Sharpton wants passed would reform the Civilian Complaint Review Board, require drug testing after cops fire their guns and ban arrest quotas. What do you think about Sharpton's protests? Do you think they'll bring about change or are they just a nuisance?[NYDN]

I think that Sharpton's antics are just a nuisance. I just feel that he uses events such as the Sean Bell case to further himself in the public eye. I wish he was this vocal about black on black crime. I wish he would address the issues that blacks have toward one another and work on that. I would definitely block traffic for that!

You tell it Cosmic! Tell it!

That's my major beef with him. The other is with him being a major media whore.

I will say that I do agree with testing cops for drugs or alcohol. I'm suspicious of those cops being drunk during the Sean Bell shooting.

Well, something needs to happen in NYC for the cops to change their behavior. Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo, Patrick Dorismond and countless other New Yorkers of color have been killed by police under suspicious circumstances. Something's gotta give. Something has to change.

I agree something has to change. I almost wish Sharpton wouldn't get involved, because he's such a polarizing figure. On one hand, the situation requires advocacy; on the other, someone like Sharpton can draw very negative attention and overshadow the issue.

Sharpton should get some of those guys who stand on the cornors all day(aka the next possible Sean Bells) to come out and support this march. The elderly chruch women and civil rights veterans need a break.

*Sorry if it sounds cold but its the truth.

Don't worry, he's got that covered! *eyeroll*

And as much as I find them annoying, the truth is that if you replace Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson with any other dudes, they would become the new "polarizing figures", because black people who consistently address anti-black racism in America will be widely percieved and subsequently characterized as "polarizing", no matter how nice, intelligent, softly-spoken and morally upstanding they may be.

Agrees with DivergentDana wholeheartedly.

I feel you Chic Noir. Sometimes I think the corner is the main home for a lot of young black men.
