All Wired Up Over The Emmy Nominations

thewireboys.jpg
The Emmy nominations are out, and to quote Isaiah Washington quoting the movie Network, "I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!"

I'm mad as hell because the best show on television didn't get nominated for a single award. Not a writing award. Not a directing award. Certainly not an acting award or what it mainly deserves, which is Best Drama Series. And it's not just me pouting over my favorite show being ignored. Television critics who know far more about these things than I do routinely tout it as the best show television has seen in years. Maybe ever. And the one thing that sets it apart from the shows in the best drama category — Grey's Anatomy, House, Boston Legal, Heroes, and The Sopranos — is that the cast is almost entirely black, the show is set in poverty-stricken inner city Baltimore, and the writers and producers don't pull any punches or coddle the audience. Yeah, I'm talking about The Wire, and I shouldn't be surprised that its being ignored in its fourth season. It was ignored in the previous three. Not that I had a lot of respect for this particular award show in the past, but now I'm completely done. Done!

I will swallow my bitterness for a moment to congratulate Grey's Chandra Wilson, Ugly Betty's Vanessa Williams, and Life Support's Queen Latifah for their acting noms. Return of the bitterness: they probably won't win.

A travesty. The best show on television, period. I have to believe it didn't get any nominations b/c people aren't watching. Because if you do, it can't be denied. And any of Stereohyped readers that haven't seen it, please watch. It's such an important show, and features the best acting I've ever seen on television (those 4 boys are amazing, and the actors who play Marlo and Snoop are truly terrifying).

I'm a reader that hasn't seen it (my cable isn't what it might be…maybe when I graduate from school I can step my cable game up, with premium channels and tivo). I'm also a reader who should be working, so I worry that adding one more time consuming habit might be the last thing I need.

I agree with everything. It's ridiculous that The Wire hasn't gotten recognized at all in its four years. In addition to the aforementioned boys, Andre Royo (Bubs) gave an amazing performance this past season.

And is there a more engaging, memorable character on television than Michael K Williams' Omar?

But the real travesty is that David Simon (who is white, btw) has not received any recognition for his composition.

There is not a single awards ceremony out there, not a single one - for music, film, Nobel peace, whatever… - not a single one that should be taken seriously.

Ok, maybe you can take the Nobel Peace Prize seriously.

This is, hands down, the best show on TV. If HBO wanted it to win awards, it would win them. I don't think it has to do with viewership b/c many people and shows have one Emmys with questionable viewership. A few years ago Ricky Gervaise from The Office one an Emmy and one knew who he was. He gave his acceptance speech and made a wise-crack about England once owning America and the audience was like, "who is this fool?" At that point, no one was watching the BBC in the states, but he won b/c his character was awesome. There's no coincidence that shortly after that, ppl started watching it. If the Wire got some shine for some of it's brilliant actors more ppl would see what an amazing, brilliant show it is. We always talk about how there are no black actors out there making it in Hollywood…watch the Wire and you will see a show full of some of the most brilliant, young talent around…black or white.

Bottom line it comes to race. The people who run the Emmys do not know how to respond to anything that it is out of their comfort zone. A tv show that gives depth to black characters?! Like thew robot said in "Lost in Space": it does not compute.

Damn. That makes me sad. I've never seen a better written show on the telly than all the seasons of The Wire. All of the actors are so believable. It's a shame that they aren't getting any recognition from the emmys. Shame on them. Who do we shoot an email or a letter or a phone call to about this?

The Wire is the best show on television. The writing is excellent, the direction is masterful and the actors do wonderful things with their characters. I find it absolutely amazing that The Emmys have bypassed this show. That's just ridiculous.

I wanted to comment to keep the link fresh…

The Wire is not only the best show on television it is the most important work on television. It is critical, comprehensive and unblemished. The Wire is our America.
