Baldwin Hills Can't Compete With The Hollywood Hills
Thank Goodness

baldwinhills.jpg

Baldwin Hills, the teen-focused reality show that is marketed as BET's answer to Laguna Beach and The Hills, premiered with a respectable (for BET) 1.5 million viewers on Tuesday. As 2007-2008 BET premieres go, the show comes in second place after Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, meaning troubled R&B stars are more compelling to BET viewers than upper-middle-class kids and their overbearing parents. But how do Baldwin Hills' second season premiere numbers compare to its counterpart at MTV?

The Hills season 3 premiere in March scored 4.7 million viewers, plus 1.8 million streams from the web site. Baldwin Hills — the production value, marketing, and press attention pale in comparison to what The Hills has — and The Hills represent the differences between their respective networks. One has all the glory and the money and the fame and the attention, and the other, well, doesn't.* And, really, it's a blessing that these kids will never end up on the cover of Us Weekly. The world doesn't need any more Spencers and Heidis, white or black.

*Unless, by attention, we're talking Enough is Enough protests, boycotts, and fleeing advertisers.

I was sorely dissapointed with the season premiere. First of all it seemed that BET switched the episodes around so at 10PM the second episode of season two aired and at 10:30 the first season aired and that didn't help any of us who watched.

Second, the new kids are wack. The only new kid I like is Justin and that's because he is foin–fine and he loves him some Jesus. Lo'Rena and her twin, double hot messes.

But I will say I still love the old-school kids. Gerren looks great. Stacy is doing well too and so is Sal. I'd rather watch a second season of the kids from last season to see what they are doing.

I think the show Baldwin Hills is so wack!! If that show is the black answer to The Hills on MTV then they should end production immediately.

Baldwin Hills does not compare to the Hills. It looks cheap and its very obvious that many parts are scripted.

The concept is such a cheap rip-off of the Hills that I'm almost embarrased for its producers. If BET was going to appropriate MTV's programming ideas, I wish they'd pick a better show, like The Paper.

The funny thing is that BET prolly thinks this crap is progressive.

I really do try to support BET in some endeavors but it's true. I'd rather watch "The Hills." I was really excited about the concept of a reality show that follows young upper-middle class black kids but they aren't even bringing great plots. Maybe BET might want to get a Prince Georges County reality show so the world can see how the black upper-class really gets down. Jack & Jill, Cotillions, etc. Where is the depth Debra?

I don't need to see "My name is Earl. I wear a curl. I'm light-skinned" in the New York Times again.

I've never watched either of these crap shows, and have zero interest in starting. Both MTV and BET contribute nothing except the further dumbing down of America.

Oh BET… always slagging behind. They make black people look bad (always behind the rest of the pack).

I've never watched either of these shows. Watching well-to-do teenagers go through drama; I can't relate nor can I watch. I also hate Sweet 16. They're the future and it seems like it will be a world filled with even harsher classism and elitism the way those spoiled brats act. UGH!

I agree with Loudmouth Protestant, a PG -oops, I meant, a goregeous Prince George's spin on Baldwin Hills would be fantastic.

I dont understand how Bladwin Hills is the answer to the Hills…They dont seem to be anywhere as wealthy as the Hills kids.

Stephanie and Ike, you are both idiots. This is not about wealth, it is about character. Look past the "bling"! Baldwin Hills at least has characters that have some type of personality and have dealt with trials and tribulationsof life! They were not "handed" everything, unlike the Hills characters….

omg! you ppl are hating on a really, really good show! being a middle-class african-american teen myself i definitely can agree with some of the things and drama the teens on Baldwin hills go through…..I watched all the re-runs of season one, one day, and i just completely fell in love with it! While on the other hand, I watched one show of "The Hills" and never watched it again. It's boring, and i can't even begin to get into the storyline…yuck! hate it.

Bet is doing just fine with this show…pshh even my grandma watches it. lol

I love me some Baldwin hills!!!!!!

You people make me mad in The Hills its about a bunch of whore with no values.

Baldwin Hills on the other hand has girls with morals and great values and aren't just sleepin around like the sluts on the hills.

No wonder why BLACK PEOPLE can't move foward.Y can't we just support each other. Who cares if "BET" copied MTV's "The Hills". We got the opportunity to put some more black faces on television…so be it. Come on already. All that just pushes the white man ahead and keeps black people hatin on each other. We can't support each other, than no one else will. Let's keep getting paid..PERIOD.
