Barack Obama: Not MLK's Choice?

Paid for by Let Freedom Ring, a conservative 527, this ad is trying to convince black people not to vote for Barack Obama because he's… black? And Martin Luther King Jr. wouldn't want us to? They needed to come with something a little meatier than that. I'm not sure what exactly they were going for, but I am sure that it was a big waste of their money.

I'm not really sure I see the point. Obama shouldn't win just because he's black, but to ask voters to completely separate the historical nature of his campaign, and to forget his race (which is intrinsic to who he is as a person) is unrealistic and rather silly. Martin Luther King was who he was because he was black; he fought for what he fought for because as a black man he suffered second class treatment. Obama's blackness played a major role in who he was to become, and it's this unusual perspective that he can bring to the white house that makes me happy to vote for him in addition to the tremendous accolades he's received.

That was the most oxymoronic statement I have ever heard in my life. So because he's Black I should not vote for him, even though the content of his character, I believe Rev King would have enjoyed, is way beyond what any of us could have hoped for in a candidate. That ad is just silly and take us for sheep. What a crock!!!

They never what makes Obama a bad candidate, just that his race doesnt automatically make him a good one.

By the way, I wonder how much they had to pay that actor to do that spot. Cuz you know he wasnt just a concerned citizen.

As a white woman posting here, it's perfectly clear who their target audience is:

White Democrats who want to be reassured that they are not racists if they don't vote for Obama. (i.e. "See, even that black person doesn't like him, and he can't articulate why, either!")

What's a 527?

527 group is a tax-exempt organization created primarily to influence the nomination, election, appointment or defeat of candidates for public office. The term is generally used to refer to political organizations that are not regulated by the Federal Election Commission or by a state elections commission, and are not subject to the same contribution limits as PACs.

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that questioned John Kerry's military service was a 527.

Okay, now didn't Sen. Obama request that limitations and regulations be placed on 527s, if he was going to agree to accept public financing?
