Barbara Walters’ big tell-all interview with Oprah aired yesterday, and in addition to the already-talked-about affair with Sen. Edward Brooke, Walters spoke about the problems she had with the now-booted View hosts Rosie O’Donnell and Star Jones. Here’s some of what she said about Star:
“She decided to have a gastric bypass operation, but then she decided not to tell anybody,” Walters said on Tuesday’s “Oprah.” “Then we had to lie on the set every day because she said it was portion control and Pilates. Well, we knew it wasn’t portion control and Pilates.”
“Oh, hell no!” said Star said to herself when she saw the show (as I imagine it). She then pushed her toy poodle off her lap and ordered her publicist to prepare a statement. Here it is:
“It is a sad day when an icon like Barbara Walters in the sunset of her life is reduced to publicly branding herself as an adulterer, humiliating an innocent family with accounts of her illicit affair and speaking negatively against me all for the sake of selling a book. It speaks to her true character.”
It’s also a sad day when I agree with Star Jones.
Now that Star’s had her say on the matter, there’s nothing left to do, really, but find comfort in the arms of Dwyane Wade.
They both need to shut up. Nobody gives a f–k about either one of them.
“The sunset of her life.” Ouch.
& For the record, they are both attention-craving bats who only aim to satisfy themselves, no matter who gets trampled in their respective wakes.
Also for the record, I wish Barbara Walters disappeared when Hugh Downes disappeared.
I’m glad she put the truth about Star on blast though.
Portion control/pilates? LMFAO at anyone who actually believed that.
I agree with Bored. not even worthy of a blog post imho.
Star played herself on national tv so kudos to barbara for puttin her on blast.
Definitely not on the “Defend Star” train, but she admitted to the pilates lie last summer and announced that she had gastric bypass in a personal essay in Glamour, so Barbara really didn’t put anyone on blast. She was just bringing up an old story.
well i’m not a fan of either lady but Star’s medical treatments are no business of anyone but her and her doctor. folks can think what they like (it’s obvious for any idiot to figure out she did it through bypass) but i think it’s rude that anyone would ask her about it to begin with. it’s nobody’s business.
They’re both right!
After watching the MTV show on gastric bypass, I agree with Star’s decision to keep it private. First, there are overweight people purposely gaining weight to become morbidly obese so they can have what they believe is a quick fix. Imagine a 5′ tall 160 lb woman trying to reach 240 so her insurance will cover it. F—ed up. I KNOW losing weight is difficult. I’ve lost an entire Nicole Richie. I’d rather she lie to the public than see people foolishly rush into something they perceive to be a quick fix. This is especially true now that people can go to Mexico and get the Lap Band for a few thousand dollars. Shit. I’d get it if I had the money laying around to be honest.
I think it’s appropriate to be pissed when your former boss puts your health history on blast.
During the mid 90s, I used to watch 20/20 religiously. I had so much respect for her as a journalist and a woman. All of that is gone now and it’s been gone for a while.
“The sunset of her life.”
LMBAO
Its a harsh statement but I agree with Star. I saw some of the show and it really took away the little bit of remaining respect I had for Barbara. She said her only regret about her affair was that it caused him to lose the next election after his divorce. Even if you don’t mean it how about regretting hurting his wife. She even said the wife had a private investigator and knew who he was cheating with. Then she went into some nonsense about she was no ones mistress because she had a job and he didn’t take care of her. Please!!
Barbara didn’t hurt his wife, he did.
I could care less about Barbara, but I absolutely LOATHE Star, so any embarrasment for her is a plus for me.
A mistress isn’t necessarily some idiot 18 year old who has her expenses paid.
how did it make him lose the election if no one knew about it? as far as hurting his wife, HE hurt his wife.
It’s not embarassment. It’s recycled news. Star already said all that last year
The publicity whore who goes by the name Star Jones has the nerve to call someone out for publicizing a book. Girl Pleeze.
I wonder what Al’s going to say when she starts making the media rounds to sell that book she’s going to write detailing her marriage and divorce.
@ Solitaire sorry but I think they BOTH hurt his wife. Obviously he’s more accountable than Barbara, he committed to his wife. But come on take some responsibility for your part!
@ Daria, Barabara said it made him lose the election because it was a time when people wouldnt vote for a divorced politician.
Barbara Walters is the most boring human on earth.
lele, i’m pretty sure she’s passed that phase of arrested development
oh, his wife left? i got the impression that he was widowed or something.
I can’t get on either team. I lost respect for Star Jones when she used her wedding as a mega-swag fest. I lost respect for Barbara Walters when she used Jones’ vacated seat as an affirmative-action swivel chair for a while. Walters wasn’t trying to find a new co-host; she was attempting to find a new Black woman to replace the old one so no one could say she didn’t like/want to hire Black people. It was a rather disturbing, IMO.
As for Walter’s role in the affair, I’m with NeeNee. Both people involved in the affair hurt the betrayed spouse: the married partner is seen as reneging on the promise to be monogamous, and the “other man/woman” on not respecting the monogamous agreement between the spouses. Unless the spouses consent to have an open marriage–and check in w/ each other to make sure they still feel that way–marriages are seen as promises to be each other’s exclusive sex partner or, in everyday terms, “be faithful.” And the social expectation is other people outside the marriage honor that arrangement. That’s why people trip so hard on affairs, esp. the spouse and the mistress/kept man.
Oops. I meant to say “…on the spouse and the mistress/kept man.”
Star Jones has been coming back on folks in a big way these days (I still get chills when I think about her response to Bill O’Reilly’s lynching party comment)!
Baba Wawa is trying to prove she was more than a journalist - and now we also see her as a selfish and petty opportunist. Bringing up other people’s painful histories is no way to ensure her own glory.
i think it’s pretty inconsiderate that star asked her co-workers to lie for her and on television at that. it doesn’t matter to me that she admitted to surgery prior to barbara walters telling the story. there is nothing worse than asking someone else to compromise their integrity by lying for you. also, obesity is a serious issue and you shouldn’t mislead people into thinking that you can lose a gazillion pounds in no time through diet and pilates! that’s irresponsible and cruel.
there’s something to be said about taking the high road sometimes, especially when you’re getting ready to enter into some possibly sordid divorce proceedings…
how is NOT discussing a person’s surgery “lying”? If she got a hysterectomy, a boob job or a face lift, they wouldn’t announce it. Star’s boob job came out after there were complications from it.
Oh please. She’ll likely pay off Al
As Bossip paraphrased Star, “Check-mate, beeyotch!”
Babs is on my nerves airing other people’s business to sell her lil funky book. hey, karrine….
i’ve always been confused about the pilates bit, because even before star wrote the glamour piece, and was selling her book (the one about al), she talked about her weight loss and i remember her distinctively saying that she won’t discuss how she lost weight because she didn’t want other women to irresponsibly take the same route. maybe i missed something, but i never heard the pilates nonsense until rosie brought it up and then star announced her gastric bypass. Did she talk about pilates when she was on the show??
Dear Star,
“In the sunset of her life”? Please don’t make me like you.
oogie
Funny, Baba had no problem asking Star to lie and say that she resigned from The View. The truth was Star was fired and when Star told the truth, that’s what set off the showdown between the 2 of them.
Star just got p.a.i.d from that show she just signed onto (which, cough, promptly got cancelled.) Like 20-million-dollar-paid. Hmm… not too shabby for like 9 months of work. So rolling around in all that dough might be the reason for her the fire in the belly to be all “Al I quit you” and “Barbara, stay in your lane, son.”
But seriously Barbara, is there anybody else in that 5000 page book besides these Black people youre outing to hype it? SMH
Wow, this topic has people going. More comments here than the political posts.
I think Star’s weight is her business. Did I want to know at the time what she did to lose the weight, yes. Did I get upset with Star when she did not tell us, no.
People spend to much time worrying about the fools on TV, and too little time on what is happening in their own lives.
solitaire & Daria- Only if his wife agreed to an open marriage was it okay. Barbara was as wrong as the senator.
the cruel secretary- I though Barbara just wanted to keep some diversity on the show. If there were no black people on the show, and they decided to discuss an issue like the Sean Bell shooting, people would complain about a lack of diverse opinions.
ChicNoir, I consider what mistresses do amoral. I feel like mistresses take away attention from who should be blamed: the cheater. Oh, that Jezebel. Oh, that ho seduced him. Whatever. I mean, karma’s a bitch is all I have to say for the mistresses of the world, but do I actually blame them for affairs? No.
The general script is that wifey is distant, cold, hasn’t given him any in years and they’re only together for the kids/image/family which is generally not true. I sure as hell wouldn’t be screwing a married man. Not even seperated.
Oh. Sexy barely legal boy. Gotta go.
As a medical provider, I can say that is a punishable crime to even peek at someone medical record unless you are authorized to do so. There is a law in place (the 1996, HIPAA law), check it out! Therefore, Star has a right to privacy when it comes to her medical conditions and procedures (gastric bypass surgery included). Can you realize that publishing people medical procedures and medical conditions can prevent them from getting health insurance because they can be viewed as high risk patients by insurance companies? Anyway,I think that Star should ask Barbara to publish her obvious many trips for face lifts and many other littles secrets to numerous cosmetic surgeons’ offices .
I just want to know why she, Babs, would think the public should know about this type of stuff?
And as for Star’s “right to privacy” - in our image, youth and thin obsessed culture - you have got to be kidding me. I would have preferred if there hadn’t of been so many stories accusing of her soon - to - be ex’s homosexuality. Now I guarantee those constant rumors caused some stress with those two.
