BET tried to show it's classier side with its BET Honors ceremony in DC Saturday, but hundreds of protesters outside the event were not having it.
That attempt was marred by several hundred protesters from the Enough is Enough coalition. Waving banners that said "I am not a Thug" or "I am not a Pimp" and chanting "BET lift us up don?t tear us down" they decried BET's portrayal of African Americans.
"Their programming denigrates women and glorifies criminal activities and it frankly is a public safety concern" Reverend Delmond Coates, the protest's organizer, told 9NEWS NOW.
Aquanetta Pate, who came to the protest with her pre-teen daughter, Autumn, asked rhetorically "If my daughter watches programming where the only things she sees are pimps, prostitutes and profanity how will she know that she is a princess and can grow up to be anything she wants?"
Inside DC's Warner Theater, the atmosphere was more celebratory as BET kicked off it's first annual BET Honors, which recognize "thinkers, trailblazers and trendsetters whose accomplishments serve as inspirations for current and future generations –" and Tyra Banks. Check out a list of the honorees and lots of pictures after the jump.

Debra Lee is Queen Coon. BET wasn't flawless in the 90s by any stretch of the imagination but her decision to strip it of all the positive programming to replace them with several forms of Blacks Behaving Badly just makes me sad. I'm guessing that woman's daughter knows she's a princess and can be anything she wants to be, but what about the kids from many households where there aren't involved parents with the time and energy to monitor what their kids watch or teach them self-respect? What about the loads of non-black teens whose major experience with blacks will be watching BET? What's left that's neutral to positive? Girlfriends. If I were a 10 year old black girl at home alone or with siblings after school watching BET, the only women I'd see who looked like me are female artists or "video vixens" shaking their a–.
The woman with Wyclef got her black patent mary jane heels from J Crew.

Fuck BET. I set up all of the satellite receivers in my house so that BET does not show up in the channel listings. The next channels that I plan to add to my 'blocked' list are MTV and Vh1.
I HATE BET!!!!!!!
Ok now that I got that out of my system this AM, I am TOO happy that those protestors are still on Debra Lee " I am not one of those n*ggas, so I will pimp them for profit Lee".
Stand your ground, black people, stand your ground.
Hey Jilly! How did you do that? I want to have BET blocked out as well.
Good move, but shouldn't they be picketing at MTV or Viacom?
I have been boycotting BET for a while now. The programming is just disgraceful. Sickening, really.
LOL @ "and Tyra Banks". Good one, LW.
"Good move, but shouldn’t they be picketing at MTV or Viacom?"
Good question. I understand them wanting to target the people who program BET, but I wonder who has the ultimate control over what gets aired on the network?
Ugh… another BET award show. God! I hate BET even more now.
I love BET it plays a lot variety in music that brings great entertainment to my every day life key word "ENTERTAINMENT" not reality on how the worlds works get over your self people not everyone copies what they see on TV unless your follower and if that is the case maybe watching TV is not for you. BET also targets issues in the young generation that, that a younger generation can relate to.
