"It's a privilege and an honor to have somebody like that girl. I don't think she looks like me, but that's all right. They can fix that up," Etta tells us.
And appearance isn't all Beyoncé will have to work on.
"Oh my god, she's going to have a hill to climb, because Etta James ain't been no angel!" she says… Of her life lessons, Etta, who battled heroin addiction for many years, says, "I can tell Beyoncé some things; some of the things I might not tell her."
She does stress that the emotional transformation Beyoncé must undergo will have to be a little intense.
"I wasn't as bourgie as she is, she's bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she's like a model. I wasn't like that… I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her."
This is all well and good, but if Etta tells her to relinquish a few pounds of weave in order to play the part, she might have a fight on her hands. [PS]
Bey is from Houston. I bet my pinky toe that she can turn that bourginess off. Not sure if she can do it for acting though, but if someone spilled wine on one of her HOD getups…
I think Bey is Southern bourgie. She might have cousins that are straight hood, her family had money. Her dad was an executive and her mother was a business owner, she didn't socialize with the grillz crew. She has always struck me as a "jack and jill" material.
Didn't her mother own a hair salon?
Never mind capturing the look, bey needs acting lessons…QUICK! Her last few performances were dry and lacked emotion.
Once again, there are tons of black actors who went to acting school to learn to act yet these no talent singers/rappers are chosen because of their popularity rather than skills.
Beyonce? As Etta James? Co-sign with Jilly. I am so SURE there are some little known or not known actresses that can do better at this. How can Bey capture the grittiness of drug addiction and hard living? Her acting lacks a connection to the material. She can only imitate someone else. She should stick to roles like Deena until she gets her skills up.
This is gonna be a feature film, right? Then they need a big name for it b/c Etta herself isn't a big enough name to draw people to the theater to see a biopic of her life.
I think American Idol and Rent star Frenchie Davis would have been much better for this role. If Beyonce's performance is terrible, then this movie still won't do well.
If she pulls this off, I will consider her a real actor.
I can see the resemblance. I would prefer it if a trained actor took the role. Etta James' life is about a whole lot more than just singing. It'd be like casting a singer for Tina Turner's biopic.
Frenchie Davis is on the large side. Unless the character they're playing has a weight problem, people tend to go for the size 8 and under crew.

At least Etta won't have to tell her where to get bright pink lipstick — they both got that on lock!
I keed, I keed.
