So NASCAR might not provide the most comfortable work atmosphere for black female employees? Would you have ever guessed that?
According to a former NASCAR official, Mauricia Grant, the organization pretty much fulfills that stereotype. Grant says she was fired after she complained to superiors about racial and sexual harassment she was experiencing on the job. In a lawsuit, Grant "allege[d] that she was called a series of degrading names (such as "Nappy Headed Mo," "Queen Sheba," and "Simpleton") and subjected to racist stereotypes, such as being told she worked "on Colored People Time" if she arrived late." At the time she was hired, she was the only black female official at NASCAR. She's suing for $225 million. [TSG]
$225 M? Boo, I was with you until that point. Aren't we litigious?
I dunno, on one hand, there's utilitarian-type stuff like "well, I'm obviously not going to be coming back to work next week, other companies are rather loath to hire whistleblowers, and you f***** me up in ways that cost money to fix", but there's also big picture stuff like "how do I make this cost so much for them that no one else has to go through what I did, because the industry will become deathly afraid of losing a lot of the only thing they honestly care about?" Suing isn't only for the former reason.
what divergentdana said.
C/S DivergentDana.
To Mauricia,
Make that money, girl.
Glad she is making a stand, if those good ole boys wanna expand and go global, they need to change.
But 225 mil? I know there is a lot of money in NASCAR but damn. Damn.
Wow! Nascar is just like the nba. Isiah Thomas should join nascar
There are a few attorneys here(BMD?) so I hope they can help us out with this one. I'ma take a stab at it though.
I remember reading once, that the reason people ask for such inflated sums in civil trials is because more often than not, if the plaintiff wins, the amount awarded is often a fraction of the suit amount.
Something is missing from this story.
I'm french,sorry
@ DivergentDana
Absolutely, but at the same time don't you think that "White own business" are gona be scare to hire "colored"(no disrespect) people in the futur because of situation like that!
@ solitaire
Probably
Oh goodness. Couldn't stand to be a fly on the trailer this morning.
"Absolutely, but at the same time don’t you think that “White own business” are gona be scare to hire “colored”(no disrespect) people in the futur because of situation like that!"
*shrugs* Not really, no. Non-white people aren't the only ones who sue their employers. Ever seen 'North Country'?
From a former litigator:
Traditionally, you ask for considerably more than you expect to receive in your complaint. That leaves you room for negotiation and settlement before trial. And since no one expects to actually get that amount, it's ok. Also, some othat request sounds like punitive damages, a signal to the defendant to think twice before s/he engages in that particular behavior again. It could also be, that it would take an amount that large to actually "hurt" NASCAR.
thanks khia213
cry me a river Ms. Grant… If i was late, i would get fired anyway, so it's your own fault your job was terminated to begin with, nobody's fault but your own and you won't see a dime you money hungry bee-otch…
