The new blood (Chanel Iman) came out to party with the veterans (Iman Iman) at a celebration for a NYC celebration of Trace Magazine's "Black Girls Rule" issue, which Iman guest-edited. Fashion world celebrities were in attendance, including Bethann Hardison, famous black model guru and mother of Kadeem. More pics after the jump.
Chanel is too young black girls what Kate Moss was to white girls in the 1990s. I don't know if causing skewed body image and being "thinspo" is something that should be celebrated. Models have always been small, but with enough work, some people will look like Naomi and Tyra. You'd have to be dead and rotting for several years before reaching this girl's BMI
First of all, Kate Moss was a bit more attainable being only 5'6. And the myth that black women are all thick is that–a myth because I see tons of slender black teens and women, and a number of them have children. I'm a lot more concerned with the existence of that myth within the black community to justify why black people are overweight and gluttonous.
NoirFemme, I agree for the most part but I don't think it's the height they're trying to attain.
My personal view is that no one is genetically programmed to be overweight. Some people have thyroid problems and other medical reasons for being overeweight like medications, but I'm going to guess that it's about 1-2% of overweight people. Obesity is a far bigger issue than anorexia, but I also don't believe that adding images of underweight, possibly pre-pubescent black girls is going to do anything but harm. Girls who are at a healthy weight are going to start feeling fat which evolves into disorderly eating and negative body image.
Everyone I know who is familiar with Gemma, Daria, Chanel Iman, etc., suffer from negative body image. We have a pictur of Heather Graham sandwiched between two humongous (300lb+) Asian women posted on the fridge at home. There's nothing healthy about that and I'd like for 10 year olds to not go down that path.
and also, bulimia is a MAJOR problem in the black community. We just don't talk about it.
