Black Men Lost on Lost?
Spoiler Alert!

lost.jpgNow that The Wire is gone for good, Lost is my favorite show on television — even though the writers have an interesting history of making major black characters die horrible deaths. But, hey, don't take my word for it. Here's what Harold Perrineau, whose character, Michael, got blown to smithereens in last week's season finale, has to say about it.

"Listen, if I'm being really candid, there are all these questions about how they respond to black people on the show. Sayid gets to meet Nadia again, and Desmond and Penny hook up again, but a little black boy and his father hooking up, that wasn't interesting? Instead, Walt just winds up being another fatherless child. It plays into a really big, weird stereotype and, being a black person myself, that wasn't so interesting."

I read this on a Lost fan site (I'm obsessed I can admit it!!) I don't know if I agree with his statement. I mean I can name at least 6 characters with issues with their father's on Lost and I have always thought it must be a hidden theme in the show.

But I'll admit that I haven't given his statement much thought because I can't stop watching Lost. I'm still dealing with losing The Wire!

Haven't lots of people died on this show? That was my understanding. Don't be salty because you basically got fired since this might impact your job prospects.

I can't watch this show. It requires a level of commitment that I simply am not capable of giving. When it gets canceled, I'll borrow the DVDs from the library.

Want to talk about stereotypes on Lost? How about having the only out gay character on the show be the guy who kidnaps a young boy — Walt — from his father's arms at gunpoint: "We're gonna have to take the boy."

Every homophobic parent's stereotyped nightmare made real on the teevee. Thanks, Lost!

Daddy issues are definitely a major theme on Lost.

CJ I never thought of that!! Your right Lauren, I meant to say secondary theme; after Religion vs. science

@CJ: wow. I think that's any parent's nightmare. I'm sure a gay couple would be just as freaked out if a man kidnapped their son.

Its funny but I thought the same thing re all the Black characters dying in… interesting ways. Still though, I expect it to have some sorta meaning seeing as how this show has so many nuances and layers. Also for having the most racially diverse cast on a big time tv show, I give them a bit of a pass.

And yes, everybody on Lost(save for Sayeed) has daddy issues. I'm just waiting for Michelle Malkin to chirp about how Lost is undermining the male power structure in the American family.

I ask again for those who follow this show: have others been killed off and if so, in what ways? I know they wrote Michelle Rodriguez's drunken self off after her umpteenth drunk driving arrest.

I see what he's saying, but I have a funny feeling that Michael and Walt's full story will be told…from Walt's POV. The kid is integral to the history and future of the island.

Daria:

So many characters have been killed off - from the mains: Artz, white man, blew up; Boone, white man, fell; Shannon, white woman, Boone's sister and Sayid's love interest on the island, shot; Libby, white woman, shot; Mr. Eko, black man, killed by monster; Ana, Michelle Rodriguez's character, shot; Alex, white woman, shot; Rousseau, white woman, shot; Carl, white man, shot; Claire, white woman, blew up (but is sort of a ghost now, not really dead); Jin, Korean man, blew up though maybe not dead … And there's more side characters but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

I think with the Michael/Walt character arc they had some problems because the actor that played Walt grew too fast because the time frame 4 years on is supposed to only be like 40 days, so they just sort of had to drop that story line in a way. Now they've brought Walt back for the "future" - and probably will have him explore his daddy issues … I think it was just a way of dealing with the timeline.

Probably way more than you actually wanted to know!

I was more offended by the fact that Michael and Walt were gone for an entire season (Walt looks like a grown ass man now and can only appear in the flash forwards). Then they finally bring Michael back, and he was the damn Janitor on the boat! Why the black guy gotta be the janitor!?

A8 that was great I was trying to remember but didnt know how to begin answering Daria's question. The writers have said they always knew Walt would grow too fast for the show and had a plan to explain his growth before the show even began somehow connected to Walt appearing different places on the island in season 1(?) and 2.
They begged Harold Perrineau to come back on the show for a full season before he agreed maybe they were just afraid he would change his mind again and decided to kill him off; but they always said Walt (the son) would be back.

@CJ: wow. I think that’s any parent’s nightmare. I’m sure a gay couple would be just as freaked out if a man kidnapped their son

I think what CJ was trying about homophobic parents is that many of them think that gay people and child molesters are the same.

Esteban, my man, please don't talk that woman up. She is a real terror for someone so small and young looking.

Thanks Neenee.

Also, Jin and Michael blew up in the same explosion and, while there's speculation that he might not be dead because you didn't actually see him die (and to be fair, you didn't see Michael actually die either when the ship went boom) … it's 99% likely that he's dead. They needed his death to move along Sun's plot so that she can deal with *her* daddy issues. So the Korean guy blew up too while his wife was pregnant. I don't think it has anything to do with anything except plot.

I'm definitely committed to the show.

Could it just been that his characater was boring? I love LOST and really didn't miss him or Walt though the dog was cool. Their story line never really grabbed until he sold everyone out to get off the island.
