A group of black ministers plans to protest at the Democratic and Republican national headquarters today to try to convince politicians to refuse donations from Planned Parenthood. Republican candidates get donations from Planned Parenthood? Anyway, the group is protesting because they say Planned Parenthood took donations from racist donors who wanted their money to go toward black abortions. For their part, Planned Parenthood says that they were victims of "phishing" and that their organization does not tolerate racism of any kind. It's not mentioned in the article, but Alveda King, the niece of MLK and leader of the group, is an extremely vocal pro-lifer. So the protest of Planned Parenthood is clearly not just about racist practices. [USN]
It's interesting that they say Planned Parenthood has that kind of agenda.
About 5 yrs ago, I went to a new GP with a Planned Parenthood clinic attached to it for an out of control pimple on my face. After the doc prescribed a cream for the pimple, he also wrote a script for Plan B. Not by my request - just in case. Then told me that Planned Parenthood was affiliated with his clinic and they handle abortions and even could help with adoptions.
I cussed his ass out! Yes, I was a single 26 year old, but I did not request GYN advice. All young Black women do not wish to get rid of their babies and how dare he even bring that up. I assured him that (thanks to him), PP would be the last place I would go if I were pregnant because all they seemed interested in was getting rid of kids. I thought they offered other services as well, but he never got around to that part.
They're still engaged in racist practices? I remember reading that they were very pro-eugenics back in the day. The org was actually founded by a eugenics supporter.
I call B.S. on this.
It's a bunch of anti-choice black clergy members manipulating things. I don't even think one can earmark funds specifically for abortion services. They charge people for said services. I've never been aware of any freebies for black females or any females for that matter.
There are many pro-prevention, pro-choice black clergy members that are part of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. I'm on their mailing list. I just checked their website. Nada.
I second that Daria! I have gone to PP for my supplies for a while and at my last exam was informed of their funding being cut due to offering abortions at some locations. Women with low or no income (including the young teens I've seen) may no longer receive help covering their exam/testing/birth control costs (at their "sliding scale" clinics). It has less to do with racism and more to do with the "conservative right" messing things up for those whose choices they disapprove of and condemn. Planned Parenthood has often been the recipient of protests and crap because they support the right to choose for all women.
