Black Model Watch: Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

dvf.jpg
There's a growing movement afoot — led by industy-vet Bethann Hardison — to get more black models on the runways. But has it worked? Hardison told Stereohyped last month that she wasn't expecting any changes to be made overnight, describing the issue as a "slow tsunami." Nevertheless, I decided to do a little survey of Style.com's extensive fashion week coverage to see how many models of color* are gracing the runways in Bryant Park. Diane Von Furstenburg and Tracy Reese (surprise!) fared well under scrutiny. Other designers, not so much. Considering how many black women are loving his bandage dresses, Max Azria (for Hervé Léger) could have done a lot better.

My (subject to human error) results after the jump.

Note: There are a number of Asian models such as Emma Pei, Hye Park, Han Jin, Daul Kim, and Mo Wandan, popping up on the runway.

Yay. I was waiting for the Jezebel round-up. They keep score for fashion week and magazines.

Diane has always used lots of black models. She seems to always have Alek and Liya.

Go Jourdan! When several designers choose you as their token, you're movin on up. I've repeatedly stated how much I hate Herve Leger on the curvy set (Bey, Kim K), but it looks even worse on bony girls.

DvF's my favorite as always. All modern, figure-flattering lady-like looks. Her clothes can look good on most everyday women, not just the size 0/2 at 5'11" set. The figure flattery part is something that a lot of male designers need to work on. Diane, and to a lesser extent, Tracy, Donna and Vera, make clothes for women. The male designers seldom take people's bodies into account. The men tend to make artsy things that don't work on most. The exceptions would Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren sometimes, and on occasion, Tom Ford.

Do people really wear a size 0 ? I always thought it was fictional…like unicorns.

Yes, I know a few size 00s and 0s but they're also all under 5'3" and they are all a little underweight. I can't imagine a size 0 or 00 tall. I'm 5'8" and I think I'd start looking too thin at size 4 probably and runway model thin at a size 2. My goal is 6.

The reason why 0 and 00 are possible is due to vanity sizing. A 23 inch waist is a size 0 today but it used to be a size 6. A US 0 is a 22 inch waist I believe.

The unnamed Abaete model is Samira

Yes, my bff is a double zero and another is a zero.I love DVF and I was not surprised that Tracy Reese gave back to the black models. She always looks out for black models.

After much research, now I know who Joan Smalls was having trouble with, the casting director Jennifer Star. It speaks for itself.

(In the Ralph Lauren's website, click diary of a collection, hear what the casting director and Ralph Lauren says about Joan Smalls. Afterwards look at the runway show, no Joan Smalls at all. Looks like after Ralph leaves the room they harassed Joan)
Now that's sad!

Does anyone know any other designers who use a lot of black models. I know Pamella Roland does? I know I only want to wear black designers or designers who use black models since most designers ignore us.
