Blacks Can Compete In Beijing, But They Might Not Get Into The Bars After Their Events

beijing.jpgSo soon after it was announced that racial discrimination has been banned in Hong Kong, an English-language newspaper in Beijing has reported that blacks and other perceived "social undesirables" are unofficially banned from bars during the Olympic Games. The athletes who fit that description will have to save their celebrating until they get home, it seems.

Beijing authorities are secretly planning to ban black people and others it considers social undesirables from entering the city's bars during the Olympic Games, a move that would contradict the official slogan, "One World, One Dream".

Bar owners near the Workers' Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises….

Other bar owners say that although they haven't been asked to ban blacks, they have been warned to "keep an eye" on black patrons, which doesn't sound much different than predominately non-black drinking/shopping/eating establishments right here at home! [HP]

I, for one, hope black athletes show up in force and kick everyone's ass. Let's see what those racists celebrate when they end up going home empty-handed.

There is a difference, Lauren. They were invited to that country to compete. If the country intends to treat them like second class citizens, some of them ought to have the cajones to say tho their government, "Not gonna go." See how fast their government jumps on the ban. (Of course, this is GWB's America. The government might not give a damn.)

I have lived in Hong Kong and I assure you it is easier for a bunch of black folks to get into bars over there then it is to get into bars in Louisiana or Miami.

this is odd. i just got back from bejing and hog kong and i didnt have any problems getting into any social establishments. although, i will say that in bejing the people stared and pointed at me. but i was told that this was because seeing a black person is rare.

I have also travelled to Hong Kong and Beijing and find this story extremely hard to believe. Like Silence, it was more of a staring thing, b/c black people are so rare there. If anything, I found that people were actually friendlier in Beijing, b/c I spoke Chinese and they were curious to know about me. I went to many bars in both Hong Kong and Beijing and never had a problem at all. Also, in Beijing, Westerners (including me) were most often let into dance clubs free, b/c we lent a certain cool factor. Apparently, China is vehemently denying these accusations, and I'm inclined to believe them based on my experience.

I'm somewhat surprised. I'm guessing it's a rumor though. They know they have a PR issue already with the Genocide Olympics thing. Doubt they're about to shame themselves any more.

Hell, they took half the country's cars off the road to reduce pollution for goodness sake. They aren't trying to make themselves look bad in any way.

Yeah, this doesn't ring true with what I've heard about racial discrimination in China, at least against blacks. It doesn't mean that there won't be some issues. Heck, the various Asian nationalities give each other the stink eye pretty regularly.

I'm not sure what to believe. It wouldn't suprise me if it was true though. But I'm still not sure since the west has been hating on China as they've developed. It could just be western propoganda trying to tarnish the Chinese image. Who knows?

The anti-chinese propaganda is growing.

I wonder what they plan to do in China. You know they want to shut down chinese economy at any cost as they can't pay their debts to China (full conspiracy theory process!).

Is no one regulating the comments, some of these are blatantly racist. What's going on?

In my view, claiming racism in places like China, where they probably have never even seen a black person is like Mike claiming Joe hates caviar even though Joe has never seen caviar much less tasted it. Neither makes much sense. Racism against blacks is an American thing, and should'nt be inflated to global thing.

hatred for blacks is not an american thing,it is a worl wide thing. i hope this isn't true, being that blacks shed blood in the civil rights movement ,and made it possible for chinese and all other races to come here.
