This racism is killing me inside! Yessir, the Republicans have done it again. They've gone and called Barack Obama, the well-educated, distinguished Senator running for President of the United States, "uppity."
Speaking with Politico, an anonymous (of course!) Bush insider used the tainted term while going over his keys for a McCain victory in November:
Uppity, please. Ha!
I for one, is a proud 'Uppity Negro' I have high standards and refuse to take crap from anyone and step down to their standards.
@ M
Uppity doesn't mean high standards. It means arrogance beyond one's station. Everyone should have high standards, what these republicans are saying is "how dare this black man presume to know what's best for descent white folk". As the election draws closer we should expect many more of these racist jabs to come from republicans and 527 groups.
Aren't "all" politicians "uppity"?
@Jamaal. I know, I changed the definition to a positive.
The NY Times had a good editorial on this: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09.....amp;emc=th
Having grown up reading the book pictured, THAT is what I think of when I think of "uppity"- a very unreasonably particular person, the kind of person who might wear a monocle. I only recently learned that this was another word I might be pissing people off with.
R.I.P.- "uppity", "articulate", "niggardly", etc…
I wish "articulate" wasn't considered condescending. Most people ARE rather inarticulate, it should be a legitimate compliment.
This is getting rather annoying. I'm curious as to what an uppity white person would look like. Is there even such a thing?
First person to call me uppity gets knocked in the face.
For the record, I have heard white people called "uppity" before, though I didn't fully understand what it was supposed to imply.
