Can Black Models Sell Magazines?

naomivogue7.jpgAlthough the recent LeBron James Vogue cover didn't do so well on the stands for what, perhaps, are obvious reasons, there's a lot of speculation that the all-black issue of Vogue Italia will exceed money-making expectations. For one thing the issue — see sneak-peek pics* from Naomi Campbell's Vogue Italia spread above and below — has received international attention. For another thing, far more ads were sold for this special issue than normal. Sure, part of it is the novelty aspect. But it also dispels the myth that black models can't sell magazines or products.

“We’re all conditioned to see beauty,” [said model Veronica Webb], and the magazine, filled with photos of glamorous black models, “helps to condition people’s eyes. When you look at page after page after page of beautiful, gorgeous dark girls, you go, ‘Wow! Wow! Wow! I want some of that. How can I do it?’ ”

Webb noted that advertising in the special issue is up 30 percent over a normal edition. But, to underline the problem the industry has with diversity, nearly every one of the ads features white models.

I can't wait to get my copy. I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I saw that my favorite magazine, Domino(I'm a bit addicted to Lucky and Domino), had Mara Brock Akil on the cover. This is only the second time the magazine has had a black cover model.

Be sure to keep checking with your newstands for this issue. The midtown NYC magazine store told me that he only orders 5 Italian Vogues for a month. He said people have kept coming in asking for copies.

Sweetdiva your right, everywhere I've been has said they would be lucky if they get 3 copies. Does anyone know exactly when its coming out. I dont want to go a day late and miss my chance and I think my closest newstand is sick of me asking for it.

I've called numerous book stores and my sis has been to various news stands and magazine store and can not find one.

It should be out any day this week everyone. Go to the news store everyday before you go to work this week. I warned the owner of the magazine shop that I buy from about the July issue back in May. I told her that she should try to order more issues that usual. She did but then she had to increase her order two more times, and recently she tried to increase her order a third time because of a large number of requests for the magazine.

If you can, ask the bookstore/magazine stand owner increase his order or if he can put a copy aside for you and give you a call when it comes in.

I am first on the list, so I will post here as soon as I receive my copy.

Thanks for the tip Chic Noir. I've been stalking the bookstore for the past week. I just called and asked about the magazine, the lady stated it should be in sometime this week. She agreed to reserve a copy for me. She stated others having been asking for the magazine but no one has asked to place a copy on reserve.

Damn! Why oh why does this stupid news stand not have it yet? I have to go three train stops out of my way for them to tell me again that they haven't gotten it. They don't have last month's either so I hope they actually ordered it. Knowing my luck, all the black women in Harvard Square will scoop up all the copies the second it goes on sale. I was going to mail one to my mom too because she too was very excited though she could care less about fashion

Black women can sell more magazines with there voices. Here is a poem that speaks to African American men and women:

If African American Speeches Did Not Exist

If African American Speeches did not exist.
Then the speech I have a dream
By Rev. Martin Luther King
Would not have become Americas civil rights theme
or
What Frederick Douglass stated
Which would have been a lost
Stand by those princple
Be true to them, On all occasions
In all places, Against all foes
at whatever cost

If African American Speeches did not exist
Booker T. Washington Could not insist
That the laws of changeless justice
Bind oppressor with oppressed
And close as sin and suffering joined
We march to fate abreast
or
Sojourner Truth Ain't I a woman
Would not have been heard
nor Shirley Chisholm or Rosa Parks
Most eloquent famous words

If African American Speeches did not exist
The different cultures in the world, would not have met
Langston Hughes or Mary Mcleod Bethune,
WEB Du Bois, just to name a few
Thurgood Marshall against the Supreme Court Judges
And now Barack O'bama's Speech
when he accepted the Democratic endorsement

If African American Speeches did not exist
Where would we be as a society
This poem could not even fit
Because this is an African American Speech
Through the art of poetry
