In the past, I've tried to give Sherri Shepherd the benefit of the doubt. Well, maybe I haven't. But her latest lapse of intelligence (or, rather, proof of stupidity) on The View has completely validated my rush to judgment. Behold: a grown woman on a panel of moderately intelligent women (Hasselbeck's on maternity leave) has never heard of the concept of B.C. That's "before Christ." According to her, there is no such thing. The worst part of this clip is, obviously, Sherri Shepherd's mind-numbing use of her Christianity as an excuse to have zero sense of either world history (of which her religion is an integral part) or the Bible, but the best part might be watching Whoopi Goldberg restrain herself from jumping across the table and wrapping her hands around Shepherd's neck.
Ok. We get it Sherri loves Jesus and she is conservative and she wants everyone to know it. But she does not have to act like she cannot have intelligent dialogue without acting like its an offense to her Christianity. She is really annoying as Elizabeth. They both are such pawns.
I have been sitting here for the longest time trying to think of a joke, but none can be written. She is pathetic. Period.
I wish Whoopi was a raw as she was back in her early comic relief days so that she could rip Sherri a new one real good.
OH MY GOD. i can't believe this woman is a host on network TV. now if this were some wacky cable access show, i could see it. unf*ckingbelievable!
Did anyone else notice how everyone else kinda looked off in another direction b/c they were so embarrassed for Sherri?
They made that 'Damn, she's dumb as hell. Who hired her?' look.
I'm trying so hard not to laugh out loud at work.
I've never understood why she was on there or what qualified her to be a host on the View. I only remember her as being Sheila on the Jamie Foxx Show and Tracy Jordan's wife on 30 Rock. Am I missing any more?
Sherri Shepard is NOT a credit to our race.
"Not on paper" LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess we know B.C. doesn't stand for brain cells in her case.
I don't know why she continues to play the "dumb blonde" role (even though she's not a blonde LOL). I know she identifies as a christian but how can she not know that b.c. stands for "before christ". Maybe, since she's a comedian, she's doing things to make people laugh. Or maybe she thinks that if the it worked for Jessica Simpson, it can work for her. I also feel like she's making african-american women look bad and she should understand she's representing african-american women to people who might had the chance to experience diversity in people.
All I can do i shake my head. Please Sherri, pick up a damn book!
I would like someone to explain to me what in this 29-second clip was a stupid thing to say. I thought, from the post, that Sherri was going to deny the existence of B.C. in terms of calendar years, but she didn't. Maybe I need more than this 29 seconds to understand what is so stupid about a *Christian* believing that Jesus always was, even from the beginning of time.
No one person can be a representative of an entire race or religion. I'm black, female and Christian and I certainly don't identify with Sherri's stupidity, and I don't like that anyone would say that she makes all black women look bad. She's making everyone else discredit her own intelligence.
Wait. Do Christians believe that? I'm a Christian and I must have missed that day in Sunday School and Bible Study, too. Not that I make it to much bible study anymore, but I'm sure that ish ain't changed! LOL. There is a B.C. even in the bible. There was a time when Christ did not exist. God existed, but not Christ. Christ was a man. Christ was born and then Christ died. I mean, I'm not a biblical scholar by any means, but I don't think Christians question B.C. and A.D., do we?
Christians often cite the trinity as proof that Jesus always existed. God, the father, son, and Holy Spirit all existed before creation. God the Son became flesh in the person of Jesus. So yes, many Christians believe that Jesus always was.
I'm not saying anyone has to agree or disagree. I just find it offensive that someone can be called stupid for adhering to tenants of their faith.
And no, we don't question BC and AD, but those are historical markers. They are not meant to prove or deny the existence of Christ. Even atheists subscribe to BC and AD.
His existence doesn't need to be proven b/c from a historical standpoint I think it's been done. However for non-believers his divinity is another issue. I've never met anyone who believes that Jesus Christ was not a real person.
You know, a few years ago, I came across a brother who completely refused to believe that Jesus existed as a person. There was some professor, forget the name, who was lecturing worldwide. His arguments were terribly weak, but he had a following. This has nothing to do with anything, but yeah, some people still don't buy that Jesus was even a person.
I personally do not believe that Jesus was a real person. If any of you put down your Bibles for once second and take a look at your AFRICAN HISTORY you would know that the idea of Jesus was taken from Ancient Egyptian religion of Horace the Sun God.
Yes Sherri is dumb as bricks and so is anyone who thinks that the Greeks came first. The world is full of denial and I'm sorry if this bothers you but I guess it's true, the truth hurts.
Don't believe me? Check this out:

atetees- whether we like it or not, when people are put in the spotlight, they are representing their ethnicity. I now know saying that she makes black women look bad is harsh, but again, she was cast, as I think, to get more african-american women to watch the view, and as her "role" as the one of the african-american women, she shouldn't act is if she never had a history class LOL. I understand people using their religious beliefs as to the first existence of humans but there are also books that say otherwise. It would have been better if she acknowleged the fact that there are different opinions on the first existence of humans and then later stated her beliefs on it.
Erndale, you hit it on the head. The spirit of Christ always existed if you read the Old Testament. It references it many times. However, the God's spirit had to come in the form of a Man/Messiah to be sacrificed for our sins. Maybe that is what she meant. If so, she should have clarified that.
Oops I misspelled Horus, my bad. if you look at the you tube clip pay close attention to it around 3:30
Monica,
Let's not fight about whether Jesus existed. Let's just try to understand why Sherri would act a dumb mess on national TV. We are not here to have a religion battle.
I believe Sherri was referring to the fact that God created Adam — the first man.
Adam and Eve predated Greeks, Romans, etc.
Though not called "Christians" per se until after Christ came, died for ALL of us leaving comments and writing here, and rose from the dead — the Old Testament continually prophecies One who would come to save us all.
Jesus did that and fulfilled that promise — and He will come back and shut the mouths of all the naysayers.
Give Sherri a break before you find somebody going off on you like that…
Crabs in a barrel, crabs in a barrel…
"Holy Trinity" argument or not, she said "I don't think anything pre-dated Christians," which, to me, sounds like she believes that the first human beings to walk the earth were born Christians. Christianity is based on the teaching of Jesus Christ. To that end, no one that came before Him was a Christian. It is logically impossible whether you subscribe to that faith or not.
Lola, what frustrates me about Sherri Shepherd is her inability to defend what she says. When confronted, she eventually backs down. I think that, yes, that makes her appear unintelligent.
But I take personal offense to her being called stupid simply for believing that the spirit of Christ has always existed. I don't think that's right. I didn't intend to spin this into a religion battle. I just don't understand what was so dumb about Sherri's statement, especially considering I don't have full context in which to consider it.
Can we all agree that Sherri is not an intelligent woman and probably shouldn't be on unscripted TV? She can't even articulate her own "Christian" views so that they make sense to other Christians. What good is she doing by having that type of spotlight if she's going to use it like that?
Sherri wasn't hired for being intelligent, she was hired for being funny and down to earth. But now we know she has a habit of not being able to effectively articulate in certain conversations.
Barbara Walters does a real bad job hiring…
at least with Rosie and Sherri…Rosie knew what was going on but my opinion of this girl..
Dumb and Dumber
WOW. Just WOW. You can't even put this on fundamentalist Christians because she obviously has not heard of the Old Testament. Fundamentalists take a very literal approach (which is funny because things vary with each version of the Bible).
Wasn't
Erndale, um, if this is so, why do they believe this. If I recall correctly, it's after Jesus' death and resurrection that the trinity concept and divinity of Jesus were fully established.

AGREED!
So, um, that whole Adam & Eve, Noah, Abraham and Isaac, etc., that was post-Jesus in her head?
But she's not funny. She's the village idiot and they already have one.
sooo sad, cuz i truly believe that this chick is being sincere with her stupidity and i HATE calling people stupid. i really do. Anyway, i love how whoopi responds to it by not trying to embarrass her.

AMEN! Jessica Simpson, Elizabeth Hasselbeck(sp?) aren't ever spoken of as representative of the white race. So it is not a true statement that "whenever people are in the spotlight they are representing their ethnicity." Rather it's an unfair assumption that some people unfortunately make about non-whites.
She's STUPID, and has always been UNFUNNY. She's basically just a dumber (more irritating) version of Star.
I don't think it was that bad but it was pretty dumb.
Now I understand why she became a comedian…to cover up her stupidity.
"Erndale, um, if this is so, why do they believe this. If I recall correctly, it’s after Jesus’ death and resurrection that the trinity concept and divinity of Jesus were fully established."
Daria, a lot of the doctrines that Christians, and I would venture any faith, believe were officially established by the Church years and years after the fact. It doesn't change the belief that God has always been a tri-part being. As a matter of fact in Genesis, during the creation, God frequently says "Let us make…"
Hope that was helpful.
Every version of the Bible uses different terminology which is why to me a literal interpretation of the Bible is flawed.
My understanding of the Trinity is that there's God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. All three are part of the "Christian God." Before the Son was begotten, in the days Judaism/pre-Christianity (and thus pre-Trinity) how could He be part of the Trinity?? Eh. I'm not a divinity geek. This is probably something best saved for one.
The Bible is worded so arbitrarily that it totally absorbs and accounts for any possible argument against it.
Christ came, died for ALL of us leaving comments and writing here, and rose from the dead
Jesus died for the blogs? SCORE!
English translations of the Bible are worded "arbitrarily," but the original texts in Hebrew often refer to God as plural, in the first books, before Jesus. So no, the wording does not discount any arguments against it.
I apologized way up-thread about making this a religion battle. I'm not one of those people who can't respect other people's beliefs, whether or not I agree. I didn't comment to start a battle of the religions, but to inquire why personal attacks based on religion is acceptable.
AHAHAHAHAHA, 42 comments on how stupid she is. I love it!!!
Erndale, I really did not think you started a religion battle. Your comments created great dialogue and were not insulting. I was more concerned about the direction Monica was taking the dialogue when she said Jesus did not exist. That is totally going into another zone.
Sherri is not the brightest bulb on the marquee. Surely people must know that each religion has its own creation myth. It is not actual history, it is a faith-based story that exists in Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Jainism and in the new religions (less than 5000 years old) like Christianity and Islam.
It's cultural lore; not actual facts. I learned dozens of creation myths in school in Canada. Don't they teach all the creation myths down there?
I didn't read every single word, but the post I wanted to speak to is the one that said atheists believe in B.C. That's where B.C.E. comes into play (before the Common Era). BCE acknowledges a paradigm shift in Eurocentric worldviews, but doesn't attribute it to Christ himself (only the mere worldview that Christ existed).
I used to like Sherri Shepherd when she was an entertainment reporter, however I have completely grown tired and lost interest in her and her ignorant viewpoints - this woman desperately needs to get a college education, so she can learn how to think for herself in a logical manner (It's time to stop using religion as an excuse for ignorance people!). Regarding Barbara Walters, I respect what she has done in the world of Journalism, however not according to some of her hiring decisions on her show.
msim,
Here in America, many believe the creation is not a myth. That should explain it.
Um, how does this differ from every other Christian, except as a matter of degree? There are the Christians who don't believe in "BC", think the world is 6000 years old and flat, so on and so forth. Then there are the "educated" believers who supposedly accept biology, geography, cosmology, etc. — yet they still believe the Universe (all 150 billion+ light years of it) was created by a magical cloud guy who looks and thinks like humans and cares about our speck of dust more than any other? We laugh at Scientology, but not that? Being an atheist is like been in the lone blue state surrounded by 49 red states; you can't help but be embarrassed for your species. Sherri's pretty much par for the course.
No. 11 Erndale says:
I would like someone to explain to me what in this 29-second clip was a stupid thing to say…
She said the ancient greeks threw Christians to the lions.
It's amusing how the people here trying to defend Sherri have to ignore what she actually says.
