Critics Like I Am Legend
Most Of It, Anyway

By most critical accounts, Will Smith's I Am Legend, which premieres today, is a highly entertaining film until the second hour, when it starts to sort of suck. Will Smith got raves for his performance, though. And if the sucky second half keeps this film from becoming a Smith-esque blockbuster, I'm sure his family — and by family I mean Jada, Trey, Jaden, Willow, and Tom Cruise — will be there to comfort him. But I doubt that will be necessary.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE "I Am Legend" has a distinct drop-off point, which is a shame, because for an hour it's a surprisingly absorbing last-man-on-Earth movie.

LA TIMES …It was precisely the helpless plebe factor of the main characters in "28 Days Later" and the sequel that made those films so easy to identify with, and scary in a visceral, it-could-happen-to-you way. "I Am Legend," by contrast, is a big, beautiful machine, and it prefers its hero super. The last man on Earth turns out to be the best man on Earth. Gracious, what are the odds?

That's not to say that "I Am Legend" isn't slick, adrenaline-fueled fun, however. The first third of the movie is a high-octane joy ride through post-apocalyptic Manhattan, and you can't stop asking yourself how they did it. How did they do it?

WASHINGTON POST
The joy of the movie is watching the slow unfolding of a world, circa 2012, in disaster. And there's a kick-back-and-enjoy-the-spectacle pleasure to watching Smith adapt. (Smith the actor and "Robert Neville" the character are pretty much the same presence, but that's part of the celebrity-conscious fun…)

But at night, it's time to batten the hatches. That's when the creatures of the night go marauding. And that, alas, is when "I Am Legend" starts its slow foundering.

NY TIMES And in its last section “I Am Legend” reverts to generic type, with chases and explosions and a redemptive softening of its bleak premise. The presence of the lovely Brazilian actress Alice Braga does seem promising; if she and Mr. Smith were to reboot the species together, Humanity 2.0 would be quite a bit sexier than the present version, as well as friendlier. But really the movie is best when its hero is on his own, and Mr. Smith, walking in the footsteps of Vincent Price and Charlton Heston, who played earlier versions of the Robert Neville character, outdoes both of them. There is something graceful and effortless about this performance, which not only shows what it might feel like to be the last man on earth, but also demonstrates what it is to be a movie star.

See, you take a good script and budget and then put this goofball in it and this is what you get. I am Legend is supposed to be dark and gritty not "generic" and "gracious".

Uh, no, I don't think completely dark and gritty is what they were going for. Goofball? Why? Because he was a successful sitcom star like 10 years ago? He works hard and is always improving in the talent department. Unlike 95% of actors out there, he isn't under the false impression that he is extra talented.

I am Legend is a remake. There was a graphic novel a few years ago that fans hoped this movie would have taken it's lead from, but alas we are stuck with the goofball. Will Smith sucks. I've never cared for his acting, rapping or anything else. So yea, I say goofball b/c when I look at him I see Wild West West (remember that music video) and the song from Independence Day. Just goofy. I could care less about him working hard and improving. I've worked with a lot of actors that work hard and improve. What does that mean?

I don't think 95% of actors feel they are extra talented. Some are, some aren't. And some are goofy mofos…like this idiot.

If it makes you feel any better I like his wife.

Will Smith is a good actor and he has grown in leaps and bounds as an actor and I love his movies. Granted I never saw Wild Wild West, so I can't comment on that, but he's had a lot of very entertaining movies that I felt were worth the money for the ticket. As far as not following the book…I'm fine with that as long as the departures from the book are done well. A movie can never compete with a book anyway.

Wild Wild West looked bad so I didn't see it. Even my favorite actors (Meryl Streep) who are incredibly talented make awful movies that I'd never pay to see. If Meryl makes awful choices and has truly shittastic roles, surely mere mortals can as well.

Not a huge Jada fan. I don't dislike her or anything. I think she has gorgeous skin. Not a huge Will fan, but I admire his recent candor about the lack of talent. Most of these idiot actors walk around with a chip on their shoulders (Katherine Heigl is on the very top of that list) and the humility is a breath of fresh air.

Well…according to the reviews posted above the second half of the flick sucked so as far it being well done that's already out the window. I'll check it out this weekend b/c my better half wants to. I will never be deterred from thinking that this movie would have been 110% better with someone else in the lead. I mean, I'd rather just netflix Omega Man. Now that's cinema!!! Hahahaha! ;-)

Oh honey. Just go to the theater together and watch separate movies. It's one thing to watch a movie at home when you can read a magazine while he's watching, but what else are you going to be able to do in a dark theater?

"but what else are you going to be able to do in a dark theater?"

That's a set-up and I'm not taking the bait, dear one.

Nah, I'll go b/c then when I want to see something that he doesn't he has to go with me.

I am Legend opened at #1 with a larger take than LOTR: Return of the King–$76.5M! Love him or hate him, he brings people to the theater. Daria, I so agree with you about Katherine Heigl b/c she annoys the living hell outta me. She's so damn self-righteous and takes herself way too seriously. My sweetie and I will be checking it out tomorrow since we got distracted, ahem, and missed out on going yesterday. LOL I have faith it'll be better than Wild Wild West (Salma was in that too but went on to do Frida so…)and MIB two. I hope I'm right. :)

Yeah Coco. I have a very active loathing for Ms. Heigl right now. I could probably write a long a– article on all the ways in which she's irritating. I just hope Judd Apatow black balls her unappreciative a–. She has the nerve to call a movie that portrays women as responsible (vs. men as funny pot smoking deadbeats) sexist while posing like a pin-up and hocking some movie about how she can't get a man after being a bridesmaid 27 times? I don't say it often because I'm a sorta feminist, but the b—- needs to shut her fat mouth and continue showing cleavage as that is perhaps her only redeeming quality.

JB - As an actor he's awesome. Especially when he's getting his jungle love on like he did in Omega Man. LMAO. See, I'm a B sci-fi and horror flick fanatic so I HAVE to love The Hes (his politics not so much).
