Donyale Luna, British Vogue — 1966
Donyale Luna, a Detroit-born model originally named Peggy Ann Freeman, became the first black woman to grace a Vogue cover when she appeared on the cover of British Vogue in 1966. It would be 8 more years until Beverly Johnson would similarly segregate the cover of American Vogue. Below, check out some (not all) American Vogue covers featuring black models, actresses, and female (y'all have seen that LeBron cover more than enough) athletes. Who do you think will be next?

That 2001 cover with Marion Jones - THAT'S how you do a cover for the issue of shape with an athlete!

A brown celebrity. Celebrities are the new cover models. Someone with something to plug, some big movie or project.

Come on guys the idea is that black models need to work.

Chanel Iman (google her), needs to be on the next cover as far as black high fashion models go she is the one right now.

The rest are actors or commercial working girls.

Wasn't Chanel Iman the youngest model to be on the cover of some high fashion mag? Grant it she was on there with a whole bunch of white models. She's the models that's black and japanese right?

I have a few more posted on my blog. Some are international covers.

FYI, that cover with Naomi on the second line is the reason Anna gives for hestating to use black models on the cover. She has said it was the lowest seller of all times.
Sheri Belafontae had about 5 covers during the 80's. Dianna Vreeland, the woman who brought Andre Leon Tally on board at Vogue put black models on the cover.

MeikMeik- Yes she was on the cover of Vogue last May. She is 1/4 Koren because her mother is half. Channel is also in the new Victoria Secret catalog. Jourdan Dunn may get a cover if Anna likes her but I am sure Anna loves Channel.

Sweetdiva- Seleita Ebanks is to commerical.I can't recall seeing her do any editorials or major runway shows.

God I still can't get over that J-Hud cover. OPEN MOUTH!! WHY?? it could have looked so much better. Im glad Vogue Italia is on board but honestly, USA Vogue can eat a dick (thanks ice T!) cuz they consistently shit on black folk.

Umm… and can we talk about Oprah's waist? We all now her waist has not been that slim since she was still in the fetus. SO UNREALISTIC.

Sanna looks like a member of richromances.com where some hollywood celebrities and models are seeking for love. She is on her way to new love now?

Anna starved Oprah for that cover shot.

Chanel Iman is doing VS?! The madness has got to stop. I adore her, but her frame is absurdly small for lingerie. I don't do VS at all anymore so I don't know what's going on with them except for Marisa Miller, Selita Banks and the Brazilians who get their own press. They've all got a good 20 or 25 lbs on Chanel. While I do thin VS reeks of desperation these days (vs. confident, natural sexiness from a decade ago), I don't think the solution is to put high fashion models in their catalog. Oluchi can do both pretty seamlessly So can Gisele. Chanel though? Hmmm.

Side note: I adore Marisa Miller. I always have. You'd thin bottle blond + too much sun + huge breast implants + skinny chick = hot mess. On her though, it works. I don't know how she'll look when she's 35 or 40, but she looks good now.

I hope Chanel Iman or Jourdan Dunn. If I want a celebrity on the cover of a fashion mag, I'll get Marie Claire. I know the argument for sales with celeb covers but I miss the age of the supers. I have a love-hate relationship with VS since they show size 2 models in the full-figure bras, using cutlets. Why can't they find some models (Tyra-esque figures) who aren't damn sticks who have real curves (i.e. don't have to stick their backs out and angle with one leg twisted to look like they have an ass–Gisele does it often)to model lingerie. They can look fit and sexy instead of twiggy and fake. Side note: Marisa used to do Frederick's catalogs and all their models are "enhanced" so it's interesting she's doing a mainstream catalog now.

DUDE! Stop with the damn spam, man! Straight up. U r working my nerves.
