Darkroom
The Black Sitcom: In Pictures

Hello, dolls! In my absence,** Cord Jefferson sparked a healthy debate about black sitcoms, so it seemed fitting to highlight some here. This is by no means an exhaustive list — let me know your favorites below.

**I wasn't with you yesterday because a tiny-but-destructive piece of metal got stuck underneath my eyelid while I was innocently walking down the street Tuesday evening, wreaking havoc on my cornea and requiring a visit to the ER. Everything's fine, but the doc told me to lay off of reading or watching television for 24 hours. If you know a little bit about me, you know it was a difficult 24 hours.

I suppose it is nostalgia, but I grew up loving the Jeffersons, What's Happening and Good Times

I miss "Desmond's" beyond words. Still watch the re-runs from "Chef!".

Loved "The Cosby Show" and "A Different World".

Nowadays I find the acting on many shows (I am looking at you That's So Raven) to be straight out of a 1920's minstrel show.

I loved every single of those shows.

I don't know what I'd do without my morning Amen fix :-)

I'd really love for there to be a good Black sitcom again. House of Payne doesn't cut it.

Someone already mentioned Everybody Hates Chris, but I have to add that it's really good. Well acted, smart…just good. Sitcoms, in general, seem to be a stale genre these days so a good one is much appreciated.

Oh wow. That sucks Lauren. What else is there to do?!

Wear sunglasses when you're outside. Not only will it protect you from stray objects, but it'll protect your vision, the delicate skin around your eyes and keep you from squinting. Get the oversized kind. It's not douchebaggery. It's an anti-aging, ophthalmologist-recommended fashion accessory.

There was one from the early 1990s, called Where I Live, starring Doug E. Doug. Lorraine Toussant played his mother. Very funny and didn't trade on tired, stereotypes of black folk being ignorant and loudmouthed (*cough tylerperryhouseofpayne cough-cough*). Needless to say, the show didn't last long.

(And don't sleep on the dearly-missed Frank's Place from mid-1980s.)
