And the beef goes on…
David Banner (aka Levell Crump) might have had second thoughts about the way he went at Al Sharpton in a recent interview. He retracted his previous statements, choosing to write a "more thought out" open letter that he says will better describe his feelings on the subject.
The only problem is, the open letter is really long. You're probably not going to want to read it.
After the jump, check out an excerpt from the portion directed at Al Sharpton. Unfortunately, Banner goes on a rant about black on black crime and cites the Newark shootings as example. I guess he didn't see that police fingered a group of Hispanic men for the crime. Oops.
Al Sharpton: You run around towns and cities speaking words of wanting to better our community by cleaning up the airwaves. You hold rallies in front of radio stations saying turn off the music and clean the airwaves. You want to shut down local stations that are playing urban music when most of these local stations house and employ the same people in your community – the black community. When you visit any station in any city (big or small) playing urban/rap music, the staff is generally black. Now if those stations were to ever shut down – where do those employees go? Al, if you are for the people, where was your rally when the 3 college students were executed in New Jersey by black men. Where is the rally atfor those families and that neighborhood??? I don’t see you out there asking for justice yet that incident happened in a black community. If someone was to rap about “how f**** up black on black crime is and how even if you go to college you aren’t safe on the streets and nigga’s aint’ s—” – that kind of tone is offensive to you and you want to stop that! If that’s the truth, then why are you censoring it? No, you need to stop the crime before it happens so that there is no gangster song about a gangster situation.
I had no idea the Oprah was a black leader. I thought she was more of an entertainer with her own point of view on certain topics.
His ignorance and mental flab is exquisite in its greatness. I nominate Crump for valedictorian of the gangsta class.
He means well (and I salute him for the effort) but some of his points are off. Also the roster of artists he chose that need support isn't fully representative.
Akon, Snoop Dogg even 50 Cent have no excuses for their deplorable 'music' and even worse attitudes. You can't expect the black community to support you if you don't respect it. It is one thing to say that they are rapping about the truth of the streets but there is a huge difference between genuine social commentary and glamorising aspects of ghetto life because you know it'll garner you oodles of cash.
David Banner is 34 years old…WTH does he refer to himself and other rappers as kids…if someone on the street were to call him a kid…he would be running around yelling, I'm a grown as man…
that letter was ignorant and immature…it sounded like a 12 or 13 year old boy writing their parent b/c they got scolded in front of everybody in the neighborhood…
that should read grown ass man
Duuuude? David is actually not a dumb guy, he just needs to think before he writes. Also a copy editor and publicist would be helpful, but in general I kind of understand what he's trying to convey. His down fall is that he just sounds dumb and is playing in Sharpton's hands - which is too bad b/c Al really isn't doing any good in my opinion. I didn't read the whole letter. Based on his clear lack of knowledge of what really went down with Newark case, I am too embarrassed for him to even read it. Oh what will Kristen come back with next? Why couldn't Common or Mos or Talib or KRS step to Al?
