Kanye West's mother, Donda, who died of a heart attack after extensive plastic surgery, will live on forever in West's song, "Dear Mama." But she might also be remembered for spurring medical reform in California? Donda's niece has teamed up with California Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter to try and pass the Donda West Bill, which will require plastic surgeons to give patients a physical exam before performing any surgical procedure. That plastic surgeons don't already do this is a sign that there is definite room for reform. Dr. Jan Adams, the surgeon whose career was crushed into a million tiny pieces after West's high-profile death, did not give her a physical exam before the procedure, although his reps say she was "thoroughly questioned." According to EUR, incarnations of the "Donda West Bill" are sweeping the continent, with legislation inspired by her death being introduced in Florida, Canada, and elsewhere.
Its kind of ridiculous that patients are not given exams before surgery. This sounds like a good thing!
@ Bronze: I concur!
Um, good plastic surgeons already require this, even from their young patients. I've gone for a consult. They don't play. It's safety first.
I actually assumed this was already necessary, but I guess "cosmetic surgeons" don't feel a need to examine even clearly high-risk (overweight, pushing 60, having multiple extensive procedures) patients. Even if she didn't tell him about her health problems, you don't cut someone open without knowing for sure. I'm sure there are plenty of patients who didn't realize they had a healthy condition until they went in. Many implants (breast, cheek, chin) are relatively uncomplicated as is liposuction. She had a breast lift and a tummy tuck. Both cause far more trauma than other procedures. This isn't some 1 1/2 hr deal. Lots of fat and skin is cut off from the stomach. If you've ever seen it on TV, there are huge flaps removed and then the abdominal region is put back together with the muscles being tigtened, navel recreated and remaining skin sewed together. With the lift, skin is also cut off. I'm not a fan of unnecessary procedure but since common sense is missing in a minority of these surgeons, this will probably pass.
