The New Republic elaborated on an interesting bit from a New York Times article today, ultimately drawing a frightening conclusion: One way people are helping Obama's cause is by widely publicizing the fact that the Illinois senator wasn't raised by blacks.
An intriguing nugget at the end of today's Times piece about the shadowy Republican group attacking Obama in Macomb County, Michigan:
Waiting in a car outside a Dollar Store here, a retired auto worker named Angie Christel, 78, who is white, said the union had dismissed for her the notion that Mr. Obama was Muslim. “I thought he was Muslim until I got the letter in the mail,” Ms. Christel said, “and he was raised by all white people.”
So the unions are sending out mailers saying Obama was raised by white people?
WAKE THE FUCK UP, WHITE PEOPLE! OBAMA IS 50% WHITE!!!
WHAT PART OF THE SENTENCE DO YOU MORONS NOT UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where are you Sarahlove? ^^is the type of shit I am talking about when I say, when you are of color in America, no matter what percentage of white you are, to them, you are that "color".
Who is "them"?
Anyway, I'd have to see the letter to really have an opinion on this. If it mentioned his grandparens' role in his upbringing as one biographical detail out of many and a 78-year-old lady interpreted this as the most significant piece of information, then I don't see the big deal.
Huh? Don't we all know his story? People are going to be influenced by this? Who doesn't know his mom was WHITE?
All the ppl who take one look at him and refuse to look any further, jumping on the McCain boat without a second glance at his 'oh no!' brown skin…. People like that exist and you're lying to yourself if you don't think so.
uh Jason - correction "no matter what percentage of white heritage you have, to white people (them), you are that color. feel better now?
( i thought describing people of color would denote that "them" described in the next sentence would imply people not of color. sorry)
I think to the White people that are predisposed to not liking Black people; the fact that his (Obama's) mother was White probably just pisses them off.
Monie, you're probably right. so many white people hate the thought of a black man and a white woman being in love. how fucking sad.
@di-my-e:
I might be about to sound like an ignorant white douchebag, but I was always kind of under the impression that most mixed-race people identify themselves as non-white. I know there are still a good number of white people who have the old "one drop of blood" rule stuck in their heads, but I honestly thought that for the most part the identification of mixed-race people as non-white was generally preferred now regardless, not just something white people imposed on society. Is this naive?
No suprise. I've only said Obama is only a presidential nominee becuz he is half white and was raised by his white side in America. He's the "acceptable negro." I wonder if it would make any difference amongst white voters if he had married a white women instead (probably so).
@ Jason:
I think it's half and half. I think alot of the mixed kids in the suburbs (predominately white areas) identify as "other" or even white (if they can get away with it). In urban areas they usually identify as black. Also, it depends on who raised them (raised w/ both parents or single parent) as well as personal interactions/friends the person has. If a mulatto doesn't get along with the white kids in school and does get along with the blacks, he/she may identify as black, vice versa.
@ Jason, I think it depends on your environment. Ike's comment is dead on. You don't sound like a douche, I am glad that you asked your question. The more we all understand about race relations, the better.
This post is referencing a woman from Michigan's Macomb County, which borders Detroit. Around these parts, generally, if you are mixed race, you are grouped as the "color" part. It matters not who you identify with, who raised you, or how you present yourself. If you are looking for a job, a home, a school, whateves - you are NOT white, and a lot of the residents and powers that be make that clear to you.
As for blackness being defined by rural vs urban, it depends. The rural region where I grew up most farmers were either Black, First Nations or Japanese-Candians - so rural doesn't mean white.
I have cousins in Oklahoma, they are mixed race (Cherokee and Black) and identify equally with both groups. Most of their neighbours are rural people who belong to one or either of these groups.
Generalization gets us nowhere, fast.
I never said "rural areas"… i said the suburbs.
of course generalization gets us nowhere. i am only commenting on the community in which i live.
as idealistic as we want to make the world, we have to be realistic as well.
