If you don't watch The Wire, chances are you have no idea who most of the people pictured above (or after the jump) at the show's Season 5 premiere are. They're not famous, they don't get much mainstream attention, but they are part of one of the best shows in television history. Yeah, I said it. Anyway, if you don't watch it, you should. And if you don't know who these people are, you should learn. They are great actors who deserve a lot more accolades than they will ever get.

I don't watch The Wire but that one dude in the purple shirt used to be on 'Oz' on HBO. Now that show was my sh-t!!!
The Wire is an amazing show - fantastic cast, brilliant writing and direction. however, if you can't deal with a heartbreaking, gritty and completely realistic portrayal of inner city living then this probably isn't the show for you.
^^Agreed. My husband doesn't like it. Inner city life is something he is totally unfamiliar with so he doesn't really get the shows popularity nor can he sit through more than 10 minutes of it.
Unfortunately, I'll have to wait for the end of the season to catch it on Netflix. The thing I love most about The Wire is it really shows varied portraits of complex Black Men. I think it's the only program to ever to do that.
I only started watching the Wire 2 seasons ago. But its become my favourite show. I agree with Lele I love the complex characters on the show and how no ones a straight up good or bad guy. Its the only real drama on tv.
HBO has been pulling and/or ending all it's great shows lately. They better have some really, really good ish in the pipeline or else I'm gonna be pissed.
The Wire will become a television classic in years to come. People will wonder why they didn't get hip to it while it was on.
I am not a fan of the Wire. Tried to watch it at least twice, but it was typical urban violence, drug dealing, etc to me.
That's what my hubster says, too. I think the level of talent, character depth and complex, interwoven plots make it atypical not just for a drama focusing on a facet of black life, but for any recent TV show that I've seen.
I must admit, I don't watch The Wire. I've tried, but its not my kind of tv show. I know about it, though. I remember my mom being so mad when Stringer Bell was killed off, then I found out her and plenty other women were fans. Although its not my fave tv show to watch, I can say that there are very good actors/actresses on the show and should be nominated for awards like another crime based show on HBO.
well, i was just about to write how i'm waiting on someone to return the first dvd of season three to my local video store and i can't wait to watch three and four and eventually get caught up. but now all i can think about is that stringer dies…oh well
Awww…damn. I guess there should be a "spoiler alert" header on some of the posts. LOL.
haha, it's cool. i actually knew one of the main characters was going to die in the second season (don't know how i'd heard that but failed to know about stringer), and watching it unfold over hte course of a few episodes was still just as captivating to me as if i'd been completely surprised. the show is just that good.
It's cool that you catch up to shows with dvds. I've tried that (I missed an entire season of House) and the dvds just sit on my rack.
@ Lola Falana.
Calling The Wire a show about 'typical urban violence, drug dealing, etc' completely misses the point. the show is about bureaucracies and institutions. one of those happens to be a drug gang, but there's a police department, a city government, a failing school, and now a newspaper — and each of them have their own agendas.
you should give it a real chance. there's never been a more dizzying array of black characters on a TV show.
don't forget a union, lol, i just finished season two.
LOL@gossip!! Keep it up, girl. I'll try to remember not to spoil anything.
I've seen episodes here and there, and from what I have seen, this show is great. I have GOT to get HBO in my life.
BEST SHOW EVER!!!! I am SERIOUSLY addicted!
