I'm depressed. Don't tell anyone!

  • Minorities are unsure about the biological basis of depression and are skeptical when diagnosed with it. They are also more likely to be worried what their employers, friends, and family would think if they found out.
  • Blacks can totally have a lower rate of Alzheimer's, says Case Western University.
  • Does MeMe Roth see hypertensionwhen she looks at blacks? We all probably should.
  • Forty percent of Hispanics and African Americans have problems paying for prescription drugs, which causes many to skip doses or avoid filling prescriptions.

I think men overall are more wary of this in general. Minorities, especially non-Americans, are very wary of it. The biggest difference is in gender though. Even those who will tell you that being depressed doesn't mean you're weak and then also tell you that there's nothing wrong with it still are very much afraid of taking medications or seeing a counselor. It's sad because life is too short to go through it in the miserable haze that is depression.

The food that we as black people consume is a mess. We have, for years on top of years, eaten foods that are high in fat and especially high in sodium.
A prime example is greens. Some people add salt in addition to pork pieces. And heaven forbid we just simply go out and buy a can of salty ass Glory Greens.
We need to change the way we eat and stop adding so much salt to our foods and deep frying everything. It tastes good but I don't want my life cut short b/c of it.
