'Emo Kids' Under Fire in Mexico
Imagined Differences, Real Violence

The young people of Mexico have recently taken to beating each other in the streets after a TV host incited an "anti-emo" backlash. Gangs of children as large as 800 are systematically hunting down and assaulting "emo kids," those particularly weepy, eyelinered shoegazers into good bands like Texas Is the Reason. It's not racism, but it's scarily reminiscent of lynch mobs.

Part of me wants to laugh, but then I remember there are kids out there getting beat down just b/c they are going through a phase. That's what emo is - a phase. Like being a hippy, punk, hipster, rock-a-billy, mod, goth, etc. They grow out of it. I feel sorry for these kids and even sorrier for the ones who have so much hate pent up that they want to harm others.
