Back To The Drawing Board

The Martin Luther King, Jr., memorial statue that is set to take a place of prominence on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., has been plagued with controversy from its inception. Many people didn’t like that a Chinese sculptor was commissioned to create the memorial. Others argued that that way of thinking was sort of contradictory to Martin Luther King’s dream.

Now, a federal arts commission that has final approval over the memorial says that the statue is too “confrontational and that “the colossal scale and Social Realist style of the proposed statue recalls a genre of political sculpture that has recently been pulled down in other countries.” Are they thinking of that statue of Saddam Hussein that was toppled over by U.S. troops a few years back? No one could mistake MLK for a ruler of a totalitarian state.

The executive architect of the memorial said that they were aiming for something that was a powerful yet reflective representation of MLK. He says its hard for him to understand where the criticism is coming from. [WP]

The devil is a liar! They really are just uncomfortable with the fact that he is getting a memorial and I think they are going to try to minimize it by any means necessary until they feel the statue and memorial make them comfortable. But MLK was not a man that existed to make people comfortable. His purpose was to shake things up, afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. I can’t stand the way these people will find anything to stop a dream from being fulfilled because of their small minds and busted egos. That’s alright though. MLK doesn’t even need a monument for us to remember what he did!

I guess sending a powerful image of a great man is a problem for some people, which is part of a large problem of how past is supposed to be represented. I think it is an appropriate image considering what MLK had to endure, ultimately it represents endurance, not defiance. Perception is a curious thing.

I don’t like the idea of a hundred million dollar memorial. Then man last journey was in a horse drawn wooden cart, not a gold plated casket. I don’t think he want the excessiveness. 100 million is a lot of money, which could be used to actully for fill “Kings Dream”, find a efficient way to build the memorial an give the rest of the money to scholarship funds.
Just my thoughts

The statue does look a little weird with MLK’s arms folded. It make him look very stern and very closed off. He looks more like a disapproving parent or a security guard than a purveyor of international peace. Anyway, everybody will not be appeased. As long as the King family OKs it, I will support it.

Lol@SweetDiva…”or a security guard”……I just wonder how many statues the Asians have commissioned have been done by African Americans. My guess would be none. It’s a shame that an African American sculptor did not do this. We African Americans are the only ones who try to be so fair and magnanimous.

Bsically, they don’t want a negro male to have anymore clout than any of the other “prized” faces on Mt. Rushmore. Even if he single-handedly changed the image, reputation, and face of America as we know it so it could become the super-nation it currently is.

American would rather let race destroy the country than to let bygones be bygones.

This is kind of like when Diego Rivera was commisioned to do a mural in Russia and then they said “thanks but no thanks”. Commies.

Have him bowing before Lincoln and kissing his ring.

Maybe they’ll like that one.

Come on, y’all.

It’s completely possible to take issue with this statue without being a racist. This has been a mess — which, by the way, the King family is inclined to make. The King Center in Atlanta is a disgrace, but that has a lot to do with his family’s handling of its construction.

I just think it looks cheap, and poorly executed.

I could really care less where or who makes it, as long as it’s a world class monument. MLK wasn’t just some local black preacher, he was a world leader trying to unite all of us.

Wow… are you guys serious??? I see nothing wrong with having a person of Chinese descent sculpt the the sculpture. It’s not as if blacks own MLK, he fought for the rights of ALL minorities. I want MLK to be as important to every other race as he is to us.

I think the sculpture looks nice. He looks strong, but I would have preferred a sculpture of him giving his “I have a dream….” speech.

I’ve got to say that I actually like this statue, and I have no problem with who’s making it, as long as it ends up looking nice. Controversy; so what else is new?
