John McCain won the Florida Republican primary with 36 percent of the vote beating Mitt Romney and Giuliani, who was banking on a Florida win and ended up with just 15 percent of the vote. He's expected to endorse McCain later today.
Hillary Clinton won on the Democrats side, although, just like in Michigan, the DNC has refused to recognize the delegates from Florida because the state broke primary rules by scheduling the vote early. The candidates agreed not to campaign there, but, unlike in Michigan, all three of their names were on the ballot. Clinton is trumpeting it as a real victory, and vowing to work toward getting Florida's delegates seated.
I live in Florida and I did vote for Hillary, as did the majority of Floridian Democrats.
Forget the delegate count, forget the spin, over 850,000 people voted for Hillary, beating the two leading Republican candidates.
Obama made 30% of the Dem vote, which he rounded out to 500,000 or so votes - and his numbers did not beat the two leading candidates.
What does that say? We have a Democrat that can pounce the Republicans - and it's not Obama. Obama appeals to RICH WHITE people, blacks of all income, and a hefty portion of people 18-29. But not everybody is rich/white or black.
The excuse that the candidates did not campaign here in FL is moot, cuz out of 8 million households, 6 million got cable and Obama, Edwards and Clinton are all very well known.
Regular everyday Democrats voted Clinton, Obama courted the independent and some Republicans.
John Edwards just announced he's leaving the race and will make a statement at 1pm! Who will he support/endorse?
I swore I would not pay attention to politics this week and it's the first time since like 1996 that I didn't watch the State of the Union address.
This is re: DNC and punishing Florida for picking an earlier date: ridiculous. They can't even handle the primaries. Sort your shit out on the inside instead of repeatedly making national news for "punishing" them for picking an earlier primary date. People in Florida and Michigan, especially the Independents, are not pleased with this f-ery while the GOP prepares to use it as ammo.
"Mamma" please calm down on the Hillary love, because trust me the Republicans definitely WANT her to be the nominee. If she gets the nomination the Republican party, Fox News and whoever else they put on the "smear campaign" will destroy Hillary.
Due to being blinded by the idea of the first woman president we forget that there are many who are extremely against the Clintons and want nothing more than a second chance at taking them down….so be easy on the notion that she is the Democratic nominee who can squash the Republican nominee like a bug. Never underestimate the Republican machine.
Hillary should trumpet this as a victory, because it is. More people voted for her than ANY of the republican candidates, and she trounced Obama and Edwards with a wider by a wider margin than in any of the previous primaries/causcus'. She also did it with a more ethnicly diverse voting pool. If Obama had won Florida (which he described as a "beauty contest"), he and the media would be shouting his victory from the rafters, despite the lack of delegates.
Obama should be very worried about the latinos. They are decidedly in Hillarys' corner (for the second time), and they (not blacks) are the largest minority in the country.
solitaire, good point on the Latinos.
Backstage, the Republican attack machine will be on 10 regardless of who gets the nomination. The many Obama/Osama slips. Unlike Dems who use subtler forms of discrimination, the GOP is not afraid to look like full-blown racists. If there's something the GOP does well, it's run smear campaigns. What they did to John Kerry and Harold Ford Jr will seem like kids stuff compared to what they'll do this time around to whoever wins. They get better and better every time. With Hillary, it's beating a dead horse but conservatives love it. It's still effective.
Just far less news worthy. I'm guessing they'll focus on her marriage and war-related votes if they want to be a little more imaginative.
Just b/c the repugs hate her doesn't mean the best candidate should cower away from taking them on. This win isn't meaningless. Sure, no delegates - although, if I know the HC camp, that'll change, but look at the numbers. She's still gonna have a fight on her hands, but the numbers in Florida bode well for Super Tuesday.
Daria…the Clinton bashing horse is NEVER a dead one. Maybe it is to those who support them but again there are still great numbers of those who don't.
I do say the Florida win was meaningless because let's not forget how this state has basically become a haven for ex-New Yorkers which as we all now is Hillary's state. So let's hold up a second on what the number's are because it was almost a home state win for her.
