GQ recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with an issue that recounts many of the magazine's milestones. But they forgot to mention Renauld White, who, in 1979, was the first black American model to appear on the magazine's cover, or Swiss-born Urs Althaus, who was the first black model to ever appear on the cover in 1977.
Based on his formidable mustache alone, Renauld White seems pretty unforgettable. Shame on you, GQ! [Racialicous]
Damn. You're taking us back today, Lauren. See, this here man looks like a man. He's a model, yes, but still a man. The models today look hella fem even when they are trying not to.
I bet he used to be a boxer with that nose.
Yeah, but that porn mustache…
Why don't men dress well anymore?
can we get a picture of urs as well?

NOW THAT is a beautiful man, not lil wanna-be thugged tattooed freaks that you have in the scene now.
Ha! I can't wait to post about this later.
I am a former assistant editor at GQ (the late 90s) so this is just hilarious to me.
And I remember seeing Renauld White in Ebony and Essence and all of the black magazines when I was a little girl.
Mama's Rice & Beans (mmmmmm)
I agree! I'll take that super-70's man over today's black man any day!
@daria–lol at the porn mustache comment. It was the 70's….but he was fine!
I agree that men back then looked like men. They looked strong and sensitive without looking femme like the Gucci and Calvin Klein models of today. Kinda like Calvin Lockhart (RIP-Silky Slim from "Uptown Sat. Night"), Harry Belafonte,Teddy Pendergrass and Greg Morris (of Mission Impossible)–confident, talented, and sexy. We need to campaign to get Blair Underwood and the like on more covers. With facial hair, he doesn't look boyish like his LA Law days.
YUM!
Yeah, I agree #8 - where are the REAL MEN who are accomplished, confident and sexy? Not these baggy clothes wearing, sideways hat wearing wannabe fakes who go by silly made up names - I just can't take them seriously. Although I was a baby when Carl Weathers starred in the Rocky movies - but, does this man have any sons? Bring back REAL black men!
I don't even need to see Blair on more covers. I'd be MUCH happier if men just started dressing like this. And still, if the only two options for dressing were femme or "gangsta," I'd pick femme every single time. Of course, there are lots of black females (emphasis on female, not "women") who think that anyone who doesn't dress like a gangsta is gay which I find particularly amusing since men who are secure in their heterosexuality are probably the ones with the slim cut pink oxfords with french cuffs.
