The reviews for Hancock, which had its grand premiere yesterday in Hollywood, are here. And they're not very good, unfortunately. According to various reviewers, despite the great cast and excellent concept, the movie starts to suck in the second half. Incidentally, these are almost the exact same reviews that I Am Legend got last December, and it ended up breaking box office records. So its doubtful that Will Smith is very worried.
After the jump, more premiere pics and some review excerpts.
Newsweek:
Nearly an hour into this misshapen 90-minute entertainment, "Hancock" takes a disastrous left turn, abandoning all its satirical set-ups, and all sense. I won't play spoiler and reveal the plot twist that sends the movie into its nosedive, but it reeks of desperation. It's as if an entire new movie starts up; unfortunately, it's not the one we want to see.
"Hancock" has a terrific action-hero premise, a nifty plot twist halfway through, and the always-charming presence of Will Smith. What could go wrong? Plenty. "Hancock" is a mess, a seven-car pile-up of conflicting ideas and storylines, overloaded with effects and painted with an unappetizing layer of handheld-camera grit.
“Hancock” is a lot of fun, if perhaps a little top-heavy with stuff being destroyed. Smith makes the character more subtle than he has to be, more filled with self-doubt, more willing to learn. Jason Bateman is persuasive and helpful on the PR front, and it turns out Charlize Theron has a great deal to feel odd and penetrating about.
The idea of a sloshed, misanthropic superhero is a good one. The idea of putting him in a comedy is even better. Having Will Smith play the hero? Genius. And maybe some future global blockbuster will find a way to bundle it all into a thrilling work of entertainment. In the meantime, there's "Hancock." What does one say about a movie that wants laughs from a shot of one inmate's head up the derriere of another? Well, there's "ouch." But there's also "why?"
Perhaps the high concept with its comic nugget — a loser superhero who annoys more than inspires awe — couldn't sustain a full feature. What could have been a perfectly enjoyable blend of comedy and action blows up in our faces trying to be a heavier, larger-than-life romance with historical, spiritual and sci-fi implications.
It's not about HIM being worried. It's about him making movies that are subpar. We give Eddie shit b/c his movies suck, but not this cheesy mofo? Eddie's movies make money, too, you know? I saw Hancock at a private screening two weeks ago. It's not terrible - just not something worth paying $15 to see. It's a netflix'r. Once you see it - you'll agree. However making good movies doesn't mean much - just the $$, right?
When I first saw this preview I thought it was going to suck but I will go see it because I love Will Smith and I like to support Black actors.
Awww man… not another I Am Legend
I guess the only movie I'm looking forward to is Batman
I am Legend was quite good for a mainstream blockbuster movie, but the preview commercials for Hancock look soooooo dumb.
The premise sounded interesting, but I kind of expect it to be your standard Hollywood fluff. I will definitely be renting though.
"I like to support Black actors." ? LOL
Why do Will & Jada's kids look so doggone OLD? They look like they lost ALL their Little Kid Luster. smh
Okay. Money saving tip for those who are unaware that we're in a recession. Go to the library and rent some old movies.
See why I want Vanessa to be my workout buddy? She's pushing 50. Look at her!
QL - that is NOT what one wears to a premiere.
Jada looks very pretty. Seems too warm for this tim o year.
Tatyana Ali looks lovely.
@LJKelly, so do I but Will doesn't need my help. The only movie of his I've seen in theaters is MiB. He's done well without my help.
Hancock looks like interesting spin on the latest superhero movie craze… if nothing else at least Will Smith tends to be pretty funny
