How to Make Blackface OK
Bad Ideas Turned Good

rdjblackfacedunno

Though we're still not sure we're 100 percent at ease with it, there are two mitigating factors to consider before getting angry about Robert Downey Jr's turn in brown makeup in the upcoming film Tropic Thunder: 1) he looks authentically black, not cartoony and 2) when not in blackface, he's practically in whiteface. See what we mean after the jump.

I'm more offended by how stupid the movie is going to be. The blackface thing just adds insult to injury.

Yea Cord I'm w/ you, I'm not sure how i feel about this either… like It's cool, and he does look black for real. I'm still a bit uneasy w/ the whole thing. It's better than that movie from the 80s Soul Man

I kinda agree with kilo. There's nothing to be offended about in this particular situation, but we always have to get butt hurt about something.

Anything would be better than Soul Man. I'm curious to see how it comes out.

I can't get over how much he resembles a real black man. To me this isn't the same type of offensive black face from 100 years ago.

Kilo I think you need to read about the minstrel shows in the 1900's before you make weak arguments like the one above.

Chic,

Thank you for what you said in the comment above. It bothers me that people simply assume that we are being 'sensitive'.

@ KILO- My grandmother was an adult when Birth Of A Nation came out.

Personally, I did not pay any money to see white chicks. I know that there are many more people like you who would use it as a reason to say the things you have said above.

I couldn't agree more with Chic Noir and Jilly's comments.

If you're not offended by it then ok (I guess) and if you are offended by it that's your right. Why does one have to be merely sensitive to be offended by it. Whatever.

Personally I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this movie except that it looks pretty dumb.

I don't know ask your parents…because your name is french, white french.

@ Souldecirce

Wow you must be a scientist…

@ chic Noir

I did not pay any money to see white chicks.

But was it right or was it wrong…or maybe it was just funny with no harm intended…like in this case.

Think about it!

I think kilo just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning… geezum. Chill. I have no idea what this movie is about but it COULD rub people the wrong way but you seem to be a narcisistic a-hole who doesn't understand anyone. Let people have their opinions. You have yours but don't TELL someone to get over theirs. Black face, minstrel shows, slavery and CIVIL rights are a forefront issue in this nation whether people want to talk about it or not. It's idiots like you who make black people feel offended and question it when something like this comes out.

I am personally looking forward to this movie because it looks hilarious and I love RDJ! He looks hilarious and I think the premise around him having a "blackface" is hilarious. Honestly, by what I've read about the movie I think its no different than that movie with Dustin Hoffman when he dressed up as a woman to be an actor on a soap(TOOTSIE..i think). Thats what his character is doing and I can comprehend them poking fun at the industry and not at black people. And I usually can handle imcompetent foreigners(KILO) who saw dumb shit because they are NOT American and therefore they really do not have any sort of scope of black diparity and what not, but your annoying.

i'm annoyed that they couldn't cast one of the many out-of-work black actors who can't even AUDITION for as many rolls as robert downey jr is given on on silver platter. we don't exist in a black hole in this country. history has led us to where we are now and if i am intrinsically offended at the sight of a white man in blackface, no one has the right to tell i'm being too sensitive or that i should feel differently in response to that imagery. there is no acceptable context under the sun for a white man to be in blackface for entertainment purposes, and i don't care how "authentic" he looks. to my eyes blackface will always be a reprehensible practice based on twisted stereotypes of black people being subhuman in comparison to white people. stereotypes which still exist and effect black people today and were in fact, discussed on this website…black people being closely associated with apes, medical professionals constantly ignoring the full extent of black patients' pain, and black people being uncivilized (courtesy of bill o'reilly in harlem). all these messages were perpetuated and disseminated by blackface and i refuse to ignore it.

@kilo- you're sounding awfully troll like. if so, get the fuck out of here and take your troll commentary back to the cave you crawled out of. if not, then realize what kind of website you're on, and respect other people in the discussion, because you're not winning any points in the debate by making ridiculous remarks based on ignorance and supposition.

@chic noir- thanks for letting this fool know.

Both my parents are West Indian, not French, and my name is actually Norse in origin. Learn your fact before you start talking shit, because not only do you seem rude, but you also seem stupid, and nobody likes a stupid ass rude person. Stop fucking around.

sloane - I respect where you are coming from and you obviously have the right to be offended, but I often find that people can't fathom someone who isn't offended. I am not offended in this particular case. It takes A LOT to offend me - and I know that mere fact offends other blacks and calls into question MY blackness. Oh well. That's not to say I am not ever offended by things that have racial overtones, but I can't make myself feel things that I don't. yes, I know my history, yes I know my heritage, but I don't get hurt over images or words the way many do and b/c of that I am short with those that do - it's hard for me to relate (and vice versa I'm sure). So…my apologies! ;-(

he looks "authentically black" so that makes it ok for him to play black? riiiight. did you also find his caricature of a black man that seems to be a distorted, even more stereotypical cross between george jefferson and red fox authentically black also? good thing downey is staying true to our community and presenting an authentic, respectful representation of a black man. so when people watch that and believe that's how we are, we won't have anything to worry about.
