I Went On Vacation To Kenya And All I Got Was This Violent Uprising

safari.jpgForget about the violent mayhem and mass pandemonium that's going on in Kenya right now as a result of a disputed election — don't you really feel bad for those rich Westerners who had to cancel their safaris? Luckily, some of them are braver than others.

"We were really hoping our safari would not be cancelled," says Canadian tourist Debbie Shillitto, stretching back on her sun lounger at the Samburu game reserve, some 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of the capital Nairobi.

She is one of the rare tourists who did not cancel her high-season holiday to Kenya…

"I don't feel I am in any danger at all," says Briton Steve Burgin, on the tail end of a two-week vacation with his wife in the Masaai Mara.

"We can't think of any view other than that," he adds, gazing across expansive savannah from the hotel lobby.

Back in Samburu, Shilito agrees.

"We get all the attention," she says. "It makes me feel special."

Thank goodness for that!

Not everyone was so willing to risk life and limb for a vacation. The Kenyan Tourism Federation estimates that hotels have already lost about $60 million this month from cancellations. If things don't pick up soon, wherever will the rich white ladies go to have sex?

Forget the people stuck in the middle of all that. It's your vacay that you're worried about and your love of attention.

There's always Tanzania, South Africa, Brazil, Jamaica and Ghana for the fun and the Mandingos.

Not to sound callous, yes the violence is bad, however what can you do? Kenya isn't just for rich white ladies anymore! I'm biased. It was on out list of honeymoon spots for later this year. Thank God we didn't choose it.

LOL, Daria. We chose Brazil (and Argentina and Chile).

They may have to have sex with (dun, dun, duuuuu!) their spouses!!!

Sacre Bleu! White people being faithful to their marital commitments and mounting the negros at every opportunity! The horror is truly unbearable.

LeAnne, haven't you heard?

http://men.style.com/details/b.....ateur.html

"Each guest at Hammer's parties pays an annual membership—couples pay $30 and Mandingos $75. Everyone pays an additional fee of $30 for each party."

Some Mandingo Sex Parties involve men being paid to sleep with the middle-aged white women. I'm guessing this is the sort of arrangement they have in Kenya.

This would have been a great jump-off to discuss the atrocities happening in Kenya (hey, anything to keep it in the media) but in true American form, we're going to remain simple and talk about utter ridiculousness while people are dying on the streets of Nairobi. An election was stolen, people - you know what that's about - and Kenyans have opted to voice their concerns instead of passively rolling over and spending the next eight years complaining about the "thief-executive". At the very least, concern for those dying and hundreds of thousands of displaced people would cross the minds, not only of those white tourists (who I refuse to comment about) but also everyone who seems to have some snappy witticism in response to the original post. I know this isn't a "serious" blog, but eish, I'd really have expected a little bit more of a discourse. Just my 2 cents.

Check out this http://josephkaroki.wordpress.com/

I looked at the pictures in this Blog and they literally made me sick.

And let's hope that in 2008 we all make a greater effort to be informed and sensitive to what's going on in the world and use this knowledge for good.
