A surveillance video from a Kings County Hospital waiting room that shows hospital workers ignore psychiatric patient Esmin Green as she collapses, convulses and dies have set off a firestorm in NYC. Worker ignored her dead body for an hour, and that was after she had waited 24 hours for emergency psychiatric treatment. Six hospital employees have been fired or suspended as a result of the June 18th incident. "What's happening in Kings County Hospital is an affront to human dignity," New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman said in a written statement. "In 2008 in New York City, nobody should be subjected to this kind of treatment. It should not take the death of a patient to get the city to make changes that everyone knows are long overdue." [CNN]
This whole incident sickened me. On more than one occasion, security guards observed this woman lying on the floor and still no one did anything. Why was a psych patient left alone for that length of time in the first place?
You would think that in a hospital, employees would be more compassionate.
you know; that sad thing is that those in service can be the most callous.
It is a travesty. Makes me wonder if she was a regular in the emergency room when she was having mental problems….. Like so much so, that they didn't pay her the much needed attention that she deserved.
This is horrible, and an exact reason why we need better education in the country about Mental Disease!
Ugh. I was supposed to go for an interview there.
Psych patients are treated like sh-t first of all. If you want treatment at the ER as a psych patient, you better come in with a stomach full of pills and unconscious because otherwise, no one will take you seriously.
If you're going to go to a psych ER, don't make it a county hospital unless its in a nice part of Connecticut or in Westchester.
I really feel badly for complaining about my hour long ER wait when I had pneumonia. In my defense, there weren't any psych patients being ignored at my expense.
It's sad how the health care system is set up. Low pay and minimum standards for jobs that entail life or death. My heart goes out to the family of Ms. Green's family.
In the video I saw, a nurse used her foot to see if the patient was okay.
There are a number of reasons the ER rooms around the country are full:
1. Patients go to the ER in place of their primary care physician.
a. because* patient can't/don't want to take the time off from work.
b. Patients are uninsured and have no primary care physician.
c. Patients visit the emergency room for a problem that can be taken care of by the primary physician.

yep
We saw this here in Jamaica on the news as it was a Jamaican woman, it was so sad she could have been saved. I hope her family sues them. No matter how bad things are here i love my country, this would never happen here
