Here's a remark John Edwards made about his electability at Monday night's debate. He makes sure to say that it's not about race or gender…
The only thing I would say — and I think it has nothing to do with race and gender. Let me be really clear about that. It's amazing now that being the white male…is different. What I was going to say, though, is being able to go everywhere in America and campaign and to compete — and I grew up in the rural
south, in small towns all across the rural south. I think I can go everywhere and compete head-to-head with John McCain.
…I'm not so convinced. What do you think John Edwards is trying to say here?
That white country folk won't vote for a chick or a negro
Exactly! He knows that being a white male=favorability amongst most, even if it's subconsciously/
I've thought that, from the beginning. Behind those closed curtains of the voting booth, people's real feelings come out.
I'm curious to see who could go head to head with McCain in a debate…not that those actually help decide an election.
…this isn't saying I disagree with him. Even if the democrats weren't making jackasses out of themselves right now, I still don't really believe either could win. If we've learned nothing from this primary season, it's that democrats are just as backwards as republicans.
Yhat Hillary and Obama have the odd stacked against them b/c they are minorities. He is part of the majority so that's an advantage for him. He's right.
@daria: Exactly!!!
When he prefaced his statement by saying, "and I think it has nothing to do with race and gender", that said it all for me.
I think he said exactly what he was trying to convey. He believes that only a WHITE MAN can be president. What an ass….
This is interesting. I re-watched the debate and I do think he was trying to slyly assert that a white man is more electable. He was trying to put that out into our subconscious. The media hasn't picked it up so he got away with one. I sincerely hope he doesn't go down that road. We have enough rancor btwn the front runners.
Mr Edwards might be right by traditional standards.
Last presidential election only %20 of the population voted. (mainly White and over 50 of age)
But, wrong if the newly minted voters (under 30s)went out to vote.
A white man is more electable. What bubble have you all been living in? He knows it. Obama and Hillary know it. It's just not appropriate for them to say it.
Enough people dislike or hate Clinton and Obama though more secretly when it comes to Obama. Clinton and Obama could both get people to vote more since there are a lot of people looking to make one for the history books. These people are waaaay outnumbered though in my view.
