It's Not Just The Athletes

maryj.jpgJust a few days after Marion Jones' six-month prison sentence for steroid use and fraud, a drug scandal playing out in Albany, N.Y. The district attorney there is on a mission to arrest doctors and pharmacists suspected of distributing steroids. The DA accuses a whole roster of celebrities, including Mary J. Blige, of getting performance-enhancing drugs from the targeted doctors. Interestingly, they're all black. Blige was the first to deny involvement. From the NY Daily News:

"Mary J. Blige has never taken any performance-enhancing illegal steroids," the singer's spokeswoman Karynne Tencer told the Daily News.

The R&B singer leads a roster of entertainers named in a probe by Albany County District Attorney David Soares, the Times Union reported.

Rappers 50 Cent, Timbaland and Wyclef Jean and actor Tyler Perry also allegedly ordered steroids or human growth hormone from doctors and pharmacists targeted in Soares' investigation, according to the paper.

Authorities have uncovered no evidence the celebrities violated any drug laws.

I don't know about Mary, Wyclef, or Tyler Perry, but the fact that Timbaland and 50 Cent's names have come up in a steroid probe is no surprise.

Mary J. Blige has never taken any ***performance-enhancing illegal*** steroids. So much legalese. That statement basically says that the steroids she took are not performance enhancing or they are not illegal. I can see maybe that she takes steroids to tone up and give her endurance with performances maybe, but "performance enhancing" is a term I thought was reserved for athletes.

Wyclef and Tyler must be getting them for their friends. That or its not working.

"Wyclef and Tyler must be getting them for their friends. That or its not working." LOL!

Actually when I saw Tyler at Essence, I was surprised how tall and built he was. I'd say he probably has the tendency to get thick, so he may use them to stay more toned. He had a nice body. Isn't that a shame? ;-)

Why would that be a shame?

I was making a joke about the rumors about him.

Celebrities have been using steroids for YEARS. Their use was popularized by George Hamilton. There are articles in the fashion magazines extolling the virtues of steroid use (primarily HGH) for preserving youthful looks and (for men) youthful muscularity. I don't think it's illegal to use HGH and other "youth-preserving" steroids - they are used out out in the open by many celebrities. And besides, exactly what "performance" would they be enhancing? They are not professional athletes - LOL!

I shoulda known after seeing Mary doing jumping squats in 5" heels from one side of the stage to the next during her concert this summer. I just thought she was doing some crazy workouts to have that much stamina.

Neenee: EXACTLY!

I love Mary, but she always seems a wee bit tilted when she is doing public appearances and stuff.

I don't get what the uproar is about. Are steroids illegal? I thought it was only an issue when athletes use them because they are against the rules of athletic competition.

I personally could give f*ck less if entertainers are using them.

Wait a minute, they're going after singers and actors now for using 'perforamance-enhancers' now? I thought they were so against the atheletes because they wanted to level the playing field, so to speak. But if they go after entertainers next for the same reason, than I also want them to go after every celebrity whose had plastic surgery, (yeah, I'm gunning for Vivica Fox and Janet Jackson to in the first sweep.)

summer, yes, some steroids are illegal. There are prescription ones that if obtained illegally make it unacceptable. The steroids that are illegal are so because they have unpleasant side effects such as death.

Your last sentence literally made me LOL, Daria.

That is a funny last sentence. I, too, find death most unpleasant. HAHA. Thanks for the explanation, Daria.

I still think this investigation is a waste of time. What about the actors and singers on drugs, constantly going to rehab? How is steroid use even in the picture with all that going on?
