Jamaica Needs Gay Tourism

Jamaica doesn’t have the best same-sex track record.

Who could forget when Prime Minister Bruce Golding insisted there’s no place for gays in his government? And, of course, there’s the sick history of homophobic attacks, like when a mob attacked a transvestite last year.

Nevertheless, scholar Dr Donna Chambers insists the nation needs to clean up its act, particularly in terms of tourism:

I love the ads that pop up. Look at the one below. He has a nice bosy too.

The money of gay men spends just like the money of anybody else.

btw,why do men make such a big thing about gay men but talk little about lesbians?

In a man's mind:
*2 women = hot
*2 men = gross/fear that it'll turn them on

@ Chic Noir: because sexist men believe that women only exist to serve them. Therefore lesbians are really just straight girls who want to turn on men.

I went to Jamaica for the first time in June and loved it. And actually there was a very flamboyant staff member at the resort I stayed. He even called himself Mr Fabulous over the microphone. I did speak to another staff member off the grounds who said he is not that flamboyant off the resort just in case. But everyone knew and didn't really care. While I would never say that homophobia isn't a huge problem in Jamaica I think its important for us to be a little more open-minded and not judge all Jamaicans by some's actions.

The comments that are on that Queerty site are just disgusting. Homophobia is everywhere. My family is from JA and I have been there and I saw gay people down there. My aunt told me that gays can live there just don't flaunt your sexuality. I don't understand why Americans try to impose their beliefs and value systems on other people and countries. The US has alot of nasty, ugly problems too.

Never mind the tourists, I am worried about Jamaican gays and lesbians.
Many have fled and obtained refugee status in Canada, the US and the UK.

Never mind "flaunting their sexuality"- what does that mean any way? How about being able to live free and safe in your own homeland regardles of whom you love?

That statement can be said for people living right here in this country. The hyproccrisy is crazy. I don't get where you think that America is this free, fun-loving place to be. Many people have died because others have concluded that their orientation or color was wrong. How can you judge?

It continuously pisses me off to see people coming down on Jamaica because of our stance against homosexuals. What most dont understand is why we hav such strong convictions against it. Most have not heard of the Peter King scandal where the high profile man used his position to entice young boys into sexual acts for money. this is one of the problems that are faced cause we still have very poor areas in the country and these men use their position to entice them. Also there is not a sick history as you said of homophobic attacks, rather when compared to other statistics of the country, it is in the lower range. What other countries should do is instead of criticizing or country for our beliefs is to assist the country in developing job opportunities and increasing the literacy rate, because at this time being a homophobic country is the least of our problems, you try being a university graduate, with student loans, and no job after for years. when more people are educated and have a higher level of understanding then the acceptance will grow. Jamaica is also a very religious country, unlike the U.S. where state and religion are separated, here it an everyday thing, every event, school, and many work place start with a prayer, changing what one has learnt is wrong from birth cant be changed in a day. Also trying to shove the idea of accepting homosexuality, will certainly not be accepted, in Jamaica or any other Caribbean country, because we are more known for it does not mean we are the only one who are against it.

Jerine, that's not the reason for the homophobia. Homosexuals and pedophiles are not one in the same. By your reasoning, Americans should be FAR more homophobic since that s–t happens here A LOT.

I don't think anyone is trying to shove their ideas about not being hateful down anyone's throat. Just don't ever expect them to spend their hard earned money going to a place that is not welcoming of them. Don't expect their straight allies to do the same. I as a black person will never set foot in Spain because of their backwards (though non-violent) views of black people, especially black women. There are MANY MANY places that gay people and gay couples can go and have a good time. As an LGBT ally, Jamaica just flat out wouldn't be on the top of my vacation list. If one of my friends got married there, I'd go but considering my many options, even in that region (Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Cayman, Turks & Caicos, Cozumel in Mexico, etc), it wouldn't be a top choice.

My family is from JA and I have been there and I saw gay people down there.
Gay people are everywhere.

My aunt told me that gays can live there just don’t flaunt your sexuality.
Which would involve being closeted, a state of affairs that most Out people are not trying to revisit, especially not in their leisure time. Why would any out-of-the-closet gay person CHOOSE to spend their vacation time and hard earned money in a place where they can't walk down the beach hand-in-hand with their partner?

I don’t understand why Americans try to impose their beliefs and value systems on other people and countries.
At no point did anyone try to impose their values as I said before. The issue was raised by a Jamaican government official who is not gay.
