Oh, Jamaican media, do you really want to shake that "Everyone in Jamaica is a dull pothead" myth? If so, what the hell possessed you to publish black writer Michael Dingwall's recent essay, "Slavery was good for the black man," in a real newspaper? Not only is it horribly written and its punctuation a mess, it's factually inaccurate and deeply, vastly offensive.
Were it not so goddamn sad and wrong, it might be laughable to read sentences like this: "While it is true that black Africa has, for the most part, squandered the opportunities that slavery offered in the past, the positive influence of European civilisation cannot be denied."
Tighten up, Jamaica Observer. And pass this doofus Dingwall 'pon de unemployment line.
Bitch, say what? This man is really serious and obvs deluded. Sadly, I've come across many a Jamaican who try to distance themselves as far as possible from their African ties while putting the Queen on a pedestal.
It is apropos that his name is Dingwall, because that he is in this article. It reminds me of something a third grader might write at the behest of his history teacher.
Nevertheless, I think his arguments for the relevance of slavery were awfully thin and telling of what he believes black people are capable of. I feel certain that this is the type of man who goes around worshiping white people and praising them because he believes that his salvation is in them. The type who is so happy to catch a break and would take a handout from a white man who is actually exploiting him rather than the black man who might actually help him.
He should think twice and remember that his beloved island is in a state of brokenness because of many a white man who has come in and made money off the backs of Jamaican people and that's why most of them live in squalor more than not and the only people making real money on the island are the big-time resort developers and companies and the East Indians, Chinese, and white people who own the other businesses that tourists support.
This article makes me sick.
Maybe it's a Joke? An attempt at satire in the vein of Pat Buchanan?
Wow! The arguments Dingbat - I mean Dingwall, makes aren't even based on facts.
Yet more reasons why Jamaica should sink beneath the waves.
LOL. As I read the article, the Uncle Ruckus tuba music just kept playing in my mind.
I do hope everyone is sending this guy and email! michael_a_dingwall@hotmail.com … it was posted at the end of the article!!
@ Tayo: Lol, that would be soo fitting.
@ Solitaire: You're almost as ass-backwards as Dingwall to suggest that Jamaica and all its inhabitants should be eradicated.
What would that do? How would it solve ANYTHING?
@ Cord Johnson - That is one paper that published the article. Please don't generalize and say that ALL JAMAICAN MEDIA reflect's this one publication. You need to check yourself. Your ignorance is showing.
You're all huge suckers. That's all I can say. Stop wasting your time on this BS artist. There's lots of genuine racists out there, but they are generally just the slightest bit little more subtle.
solitaire
Yet more reasons why Jamaica should sink beneath the waves.
So gays are okay, but Jamaicans and Muslims should die???
Oh Really solitaire!!! We used to agree on so many things.
Actually, it's Cord Jefferson, and the Jamaica Observer IS part of the Jamaican Media. Similarly, he could cry out to American Media when taking issue with Fox News.
@ The Quiet Negress - I love when African-Americans think they are an expert on how we should do things but they can never get their own house in order. There's a reason why most foreign black people think "afro-americans" are a joke.
@ Mtizzle
Excuse me? Who the f!ck cares what "foreign" Africans think of African Americans. Sorry, last time I check they weren't my daddy, didn't pay my bills and have in no way, shape or form anything to do with my life. I could care less what they think of me as an AA. How about you get YOUR house in order before you start spewing ignorance out your A$$, because from how I see it, alot foreign Africans don't have their sh!t together either (i.e. Zimbabwe, Darfur, South Africa, hell the list goes on). But I'm not saying this to criticize Africa, I'm just pointing out the obvious truth you seem to be ignoring. Instead of trying to put African American's down maybe you should consider why you feel the need to do so in the first place. If you're black, here's a reason: internalized hatred. If you not, here's another reason: internalized hatred.
As for this article, I find it so ridiculous and sad they would publish this BS. Just goes to show how some blacks are still shackled and chained.
Comicsistren- Cord even pointed out that it's a myth that all Jamaicans are potheads.
And he never said that all Jamaican newspapers are irrational. He pointed out that this article should not have been published because it will ruin the reputation of the Jamaican media. Just like, if you said "blacks were lucky they were slaves," it would ruin your entire repuation, even though other things you said could have been very sensible.
Solitaire- There are many sharp, good people in Jamaica. It's is abhorrent that you want 2,780,132 people to drown because one half-wit wrote an innacurate and noxious essay. Heck, it would be cruel to wish death upon this one person because of his obtuse paper.
This is probably the least constructive post and thread on Stereohyped. Ever. SMH.
Did Lauren take all the good sense with her?
this guy is clearly an idiot. you have to feel sorry for him…..
No. She seems to have taken your, though.
Why is this post not "constructive"?
And it's immature when you complain about the posts and are all like "Lauren would do so much better." It's like when a first-graders keep telling substitutes: "Ms. De Groot wouldn't do it like that!!"
*yours
@ Ilnazhad maybe Daria said that because of the turn the thread took.
@ Daria that WAS kind of mean. i don't think the post was non-constructive, i think the thread went haywire.
i think this post was presented in a hostile tone, and the thread took off…
on topic: how ridiculously irresponsible of the editor to allow this to be published. so this Dingwall is a self hating ignoramus. did ya have to publish that trash JO?
I dont speak in absolutes meaning I dont generalize, but if this story was able to past a handful of newspaper staff, then published in the national newspaper with out any reprecussions..then maybe there is an issue of ignorance with many people of Jamaica..
My comment about Jamaica was sarcasm, but I knew it would fly over the heads of most here.
Particularly the usual suspects.
@Alex Delarge, I don't think it slipped past anyone. I skim their website and the Gleaner's from time to time. This is not representative of anything I've ever read on there. It's my opinion that they included this piece to stir controversy and get lots of hits.
This is why I made that statement
Oh, Jamaican media, do you really want to shake that "Everyone in Jamaica is a dull pothead" myth? –Cord
This is ONE national newspaper. What does an idiotic article by a freelance writer have to do with everyone in the country supposedly being a "dull pothead"? I'm sure there are many black Americans who share this opinion and if American newspapers wanted to court controversy, they'd print those too.
Yet more reasons why Jamaica should sink beneath the waves. –Solitaire
Are you frickin kidding me?!
I love when African-Americans think they are an expert on how we should do things but they can never get their own house in order. There's a reason why most foreign black people think "afro-americans" are a joke.–Mtizzle
See above
How about you get YOUR house in order before you start spewing ignorance out your A$$, because from how I see it, alot foreign Africans don't have their sh!t together either (i.e. Zimbabwe, Darfur, South Africa, hell the list goes on)
Responding to the f-ery with more f-ery helped what exactly? You responded to mtizzle's inaccurate statement with flat out mean statements that are insulting to us "foreign Africans." First, Zimbabwe, Sudan, South Africa, Jamaica, etc. are very young countries dealing with the mostly predictable conflict left for them. The U.S. wasn't doing too well around its own civil war, thank you. As far as I'm concerned, few countries have their sh-t together, even hundreds of years post-independence. The U.S. doesn't have its sh-t together either.
I believe that the reason why some (a relative few, not most or all) are sometimes critical of African-Americans is that there's an assumption that they have everything pretty much handed to them on a silver platter and instead of succeeding, they all become gang bangers and unwed teenage mothers. There's a false perception that life is somehow a cake walk for all Americans and a very false sense of what African-Americans are like which is generally fueled by the media. As with white Americans, even when black immigrants live next door to African-Americans, there's generally limited meaningful interaction which means that misconceptions on both sides stay firmly in place.
Solitaire- OH, RIGHT. WE FORGOT HOW STRAIGHT-UP CLEVER YOU WERE.
It's your fault your statement didn't seem sarcastic. There is no tone of voice provided, so it's important that you make sarcasm obvious through other ways. Like I did.
Daria-
I agree with your responses to the African-American vs. African comments.
"This is ONE national newspaper. What does an idiotic article by a freelance writer have to do with everyone in the country supposedly being a "dull pothead"? "
I think Cord is saying that the Jamaican press should work to not misrepresent itself. Every Jamaican is not a "dull pothead." That's why Cord called it a "myth." But the Jamaican media should not publish such essays that will sully their repuation. Every article represents the whole Jamaican media because every article has to be Jamaica-Observer-sanctioned.
As a person of Jamaican ancestry, I will say thatI am completely offended by every comment here and the inital post.
If only you people knew what people around the world are saing abou American media.
Also, there are more media outlets than the Observer.
All of you are truly ignorant.
@Ilnazhad: BMoreKate said it best. "Actually, it's Cord Jefferson, and the Jamaica Observer IS part of the Jamaican Media. Similarly, he could cry out to American Media when taking issue with Fox News." The Jamaican Observer is not the PR head of the island. It's not even the main national newspaper. I don't think anyone would argue that most national papers (NYT, WaPo, USA Today) are particularly concerned with U.S. image, let alone Washington Times, NY Post, etc. It is as unfair to judge Jamaicans based on this article (which doesn't appear to be a prevalent opinion in the Jamaican populace btw) as it is for a Jamaican to judge you based on Fox News. After all, it's the most watched by Americans.
While he labeled it a myth, that Jamaicans are dull potheads, he certainly insinuates that this label is appropriate.
P.S.: Dingwall seems to genuinely believe his foolishness which is more than I can say for the Jamaica Observer and the post's author who just seem to be courting controversy for giggles.
First of all, I would like to make it clear that I do believe slavery was wrong. However, at that time in history it was accepted by most of the world. I only ask all of you to take your hatred for the writer out of the equation and just for a moment, think about what point he was trying to convey. I don't think he agreed with the concept of slavery, however his one question still remains unanswered: where would all of the descendents of slavery be today if they had never left Africa? I am grateful for the sacrifices of my ancesters and am thankful for the opportunities I now have in my life. My life is not perfect, but when I think about how it could have turned out, it does not seem so bad. Two hundred years ago we were in villages speaking in languages no one understood and now we have a black man running for one of the most powerful positions in the world. I will not vote for him, but it says many things about how far we have come as a race of people.
I am not an African-American, I am an American with African origins. I thank God every day that I am an American and I am thankful for all the blessings that come with it.
I can't believe you ignoramuses won't even remotely accept Dingwell's article. This is typical of the fact that for decades the liberal dogma (backed by phantom guilt and the need to play God) has totally taken over your ways of reacting and thinking. How can you immediately disagree and leave it at that without disproving his facts?
If you look at the state of Africa not only today but for the past thousands of years, you'll see why blacks should be thankful for being here.
I often laugh as I see angry black women driving in cars while yapping on their cell phones. These people hate Whites. The White man that invented pretty much anything and everything with a moving part has been moved to the bottom of the line with regards to the way blacks think…solely due to the low IQ and high-self esteem that the African gene is cursed with.
If I was black I would be thankful and happy to be living in the land of plenty. I would be happy to have a car. I would be happy to have health insurance that was forced to be provided to me by my employer. I would be very happy to have a working cell phone. I would be happy to have a car that works. I would be happy to just have some food to eat.
All of these things are pretty much impossible in Africa. I'd be unhappy.
In Africa there's no decent democracies under black rule, never were. No up-kept buildings and structures under black rule, never were. There is no decent cell phone reception. Diseases are rampant. Currencies are near useless (Zimbabwe is yet the latest example in a long line).
Whites and many other races were enslaved throughout history too yet they don't constantly shove it in everyone's face and demand apologies.
I do not agree with the nearly universal condemnation of slavery as the worst possible condition for all peoples (after all, it involved ALL races and was an accepted institution in the past). The worst possible condition for whites in America is their current one, in which they are systematically discriminated against, and are being robbed of their own country. The equivalent would be for a black society in Africa to have masses of whites move in and forcibly displace them.
How many white slave owners in the South raped and murdered their slaves for pleasure? For the most part, white Southern slave owners (and remember that freed blacks were also slave owners) not only treated their slaves well, but put considerable effort into bettering their condition and instilling some manner of religious sentiment in them, often teaching them to read, etc. The entire PC history of slavery in the South is a lie and perhaps one of these days that lie will be recognized.
Papillon, you are the ignoramus. And to take apart your argument, which shows you to be completely ignorant of genetics, current events, U.S. history, African history, and a teeny weeny thing called colonialism, would be a waste of time for both myself and the readers of this blog, who surely recognize you for what you are.
Actually Papillion, a black man was responsible for the invention of the cell phone. And by the way, your statement "the worst possible condition for whites in America is their current one, in which they are systematically discriminated against, and are being robbed of their own country" is GROSSLY incorrect. Do the phrases Native/Indigenous/American Indian sound familiar? Because they should - America was THEIR land first. You are just an unwelcome trespasser.
And the shit spreads…

Daria comment #24-excellent
ilnazhad
No. She seems to have taken your, though.
Why is this post not "constructive"?
because it was written in a way that makes us want to argue instead of disscuss ideas.
I mentioned how the tone of Cord's work makes me feel uncomfortable at times. Often he comes across as someone who throws one chicken wing into a room full of hungry people. Then sits back, and smirks at them for fighting over it.
Devil's Advocate
WOW@YOUR COMMENT!!!
Two hundred years ago we were in villages speaking in languages no one understood.
Sir, what do you mean speaking in languages no one understood.
You do realize that two Yourbas living in modern day Nigeria understood each other right?? Or two Masai who lived next door to each other in Kenya could communicate with one another.
Compare the number of people who spoke English or French to the number now. The workld two hundred years ago was radically different from the one in which we live today.
and now we have a black man running for one of the most powerful positions in the world. I will not vote for him,.
Some what the hell you mentioned him for and why are you not voting for him???
but it says many things about how far we have come as a race of people.
and your comment says how far we have to go.
You can't say what Africa would or would not have been without the trans Sahara slave trade or the Atlantic slave trade. Slavery stirred up and even enflamed tensions among various African groups.
For all we know, the Africa of today could have been the United States of Africa had it been allowed to develop at it's own pace without outsiders coming in to spread foreign(versions) religions, steal people, and mineral resources.
@Papillion
sad.
In Africa there's no decent democracies under black rule, never were. No up-kept buildings and structures under black rule, never were.
Read a book buddy, Read about he Yoruba kingdoms,Ancient Songhay and Ethopia.
because it was written in a way that makes us want to argue instead of discuss ideas.

I agree with this assessment. It seems like the intention is to start sh-t and unfortunately, once one or two people take the bait and responds with some really f-ed up statements, it all goes down hill VERY quickly.
I heard Cord is trying to make us all slowly, slowly die.
