John Edwards: Yep, I Did It

Although it's mainly been fodder for supermarket tabloids, John Edwards felt the need to address his affair/love child scandal. And guess what? The National Enquirer was right!

Edwards told ABC News today that he did indeed have an affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter but that the affair ended too quickly for her child to be his. An Edwards campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said that he is the father of the baby. Hmm. Okay. Well, he said his wife, Elizabeth, who happens to have terminal cancer, has known about the affair since it happened. He added that Elizabeth's cancer was in remission when he decided to sleep with Hunter.

If Edwards had become the presumptive nominee, or even if Barack Obama had prematurely chosen him as his running mate, John McCain would be writing up his inauguration speech right about now. Then again, we all know an affair scandal doesn't necessarily kill a politicians career. [ABC]

Somehow the man just gets sketchier and sketchier.

Bad enough to get caught in a motel with your mistress by the press and end up chased into a bathroom. Bad enough, that somehow, none of the 'legit' news wanted to cover the story.

But then he's talking that the baby isn't his but it belongs to a man that works for him and is likely plenty bribable? Somehow it's supposed to be ok, that he slept with this woman while his wife was in remission but not while the woman had full blown cancer?

Thank gods he didn't make it to the caucus.

I'm just in disbelief that this man had this secret that other people knew and yet he still ran for president! Could you imagine if he was the nominee? Could you imagine if the same thing had happened to Obama? Could you imagine if Obama choose him for vice president? OMG! Thank goodness Obama hasn't chosen yet. CNN is saying now that Edwards' career is over (I doubt that) but if he was the nominee maybe he would lose the election. I almost feel bad for the Edwards supporters but maybe this will mean even more votes for Obama.

Its strange that there were affairs in the McCain, Edwards, and Clinton families, but its the Black people who were actually faithful!!? Wow! Edwards is such a douche….and his wife has cancer…he's not going to be president ever.

Six months ago I got in an argument with a good friend about why I thought an Obama/Edwards ticket would be a good thing. This friend was like nah… there's something sleazy about the dude. Campaigning hard while his wife's got cancer. And I was like there is nothing sleazy about John Edwards.

Now I got all these "I told you so's" to get. Damn.

I think that's old news. As long as it's not ongoing people won't really kick up a fuss about it.

Afrobella, I thought it was cold that Edwards would campaign while his wife is sick too. If Bill was sick and Hillary choose to go on with her campaign, you know she would of faced hell for it.

Bronze, they have Obama on the cover of The National Enquirer this week. They accuse him of having an affair too.

Forgive me for being catty but…

with John Edwards being such a pretty boy, why wouln't he get with someone better looking. I mean if you are going to risk it all, make the tricking worth it.

The republicans can't jump all over this because McCain has GIANT skeletons in his closet that NO ONE speaks of.

This story highlights how he left is diabled wife for the 17 years younger Cindy. Where is the nonstop coverage of this. hmmmmm?

@ChicNoir, I was going to say the same thing. Infidelity sucks, but if a man is going to cheat on me, little Miss Sideline Ho better be a Playboy bunny or some equally young, pretty, hypersexual equivalent. I need to know that it was purely physical. You can't get over it, but you can learn to live with it unlike an emotional affair. Any sliver of pity I have for Jennifer Aniston has to do with the fact that her husband had an emotional affair with a far more attractive woman and stranger than fiction, he's got 6 kids with her in like 2 1/2 years (which reaffirms my opinion that his clock had been ticking).

Newt, Foley, L. Craig, Livingston, Vitter, Spitzer, McGrevey, Packwood, Clinton – there is a long list of public people with personal failings. I am not put off by the act or the lying (What do they have to lose at that point?), and as a general rule, I don’t think adultery should be a disqualifier for office. What is repellent to me is the hypocrisy, the cravenness that they hold on to power after being caught, and the humiliation their spouses have to endure when used as props when they make public admissions. They are self-absorbed malignant narcissists. Bob Packwood ran for reelection. Bob Livingston did it right; he got caught and resigned in hours. I did notice McCain gave a firm no comment to the Edwards affair.

This is really a disqualifier only when your political career is based on "family values."

There is an integrity issue of course. If you're a cheater, you're probably a liar because you have to cover your crap up. It doesn't take much for lying to become a habit and it could spill into other areas of one's life.

Being a family man doesn't mean you'll do a good job. Dubya and Carter are both the most devoted family men in politics in the last 5 decades probably. They are also the worst leaders.

How could he be so arrogant to think that this wouldn't see the light of day. Just like my hometown mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the cover up is worse than the original offense. It is just better to be truthful up front and take the heat for the time being. Now, he just looks like a slick talking fraud that cheated on his wife who had cancer.

I know youve said this already but, well, women: let this be a lesson to you. Men don't have a "type." I will never understand this. The women these men cheat with is mind-numbing. This woman is in that Monica Lewinsky/Paula ______ [something]… category. You saw this woman in that interview with her 93 accessories on all at one time including her zebra print headband? Chile looks like straight Forever 21. Dude, youre a senator. Aint but a hundred of you. You are a multimillionaire lawyer. I'm sure women of beauty and elegance throw themselves at you all day long and twice on Sunday. Young women, too. Fresh out of college. Where's your taste, bud?

Overall, people cheat out of convenience - whoever is closest and willing at your time of "weakness," will be the person you have an affair with.

With that said, how did this woman travel in Edwards social/working circles? Does he go slumming in his time off?

Ken, I believe she was hired to make a video of him for his campaign. You know there's a very short distance from making a video for someone's campaign to becoming his baby mama. Kind of like Jesse Jackson's biographer who started out writing his book and *presto change-o* had his baby. SMH

Point of dissenion.

Edwards could have accepted the VP nomination as I am sure it was probably bandied about between the two men. I firmly believe the reason that he is not the nominee is because he knew that this would eventually come out. I know, I know he ran for president, so why did he do that? No answer. Maybe he didn't know that it would break until lately. But something tells me that this coming out is not a surprise to him, or to Obama.

@J:
I know, right? Hillary's no super model (and neither is Bill BTW), but there are some hot, smart interns who are perfectly able to shut the f— up.

As for John, this chick seems like she's in a state of arrested development. Baby girl is 44 and seems to be unaware of it. I can't imagine that they connected intellectually.

I really think for cheating men, it's simply the novelty. For cheating women, it's probably the danger that draws them in but I can't imagine that if I'm potentially going to ruin my marriage, it would be over some very pedestrian man.

Daria, well even though I cannot understand this for the life of me, let this be a lesson to ME. Since I'm looking around here and I don't see any senators –*lifts up rug*– maybe I need to be putting on 77 accessories at one time, too. Maybe that's what looked "exciting" about this chick. ::still smh @ this woman and her Claire's jewelry box explosion::

And Jandi: I'm not much for tabloid news, but do NOT sleep The Enquirer. Halle B said she learned her husband was cheating on her from The Enquirer. (Can you even imagine learning about the details of *your* marriage by reading about it in the supermarket?) ::falls out::

OK. This is making sense. lol This (crazy)woman told John Edwards she was an astrologist and he was an "old soul" and he needed help tapping into his "hidden energy" in order to become great like Gandhi. [I'm serious.] Ohhh. OK. So, apparently this man fell for the olde 'I'll-help-you-tap-into-your-energy' *cough*while-I-bring-your-behind-down routine.

Two things that stun me out about this is, the woman is 42 and has a 6 month old baby. John Edwards thought he was safe and ready to go since the woman was 40 or 41 when they went raw. That was a big mistake on his part.
First of al,l he put his wife's life at risk due to his creeping. Can you imagine what she would of feel like, if she was to discover that her cancer went into complete* remission only to test positive for HIV six months later.

Second thing:
Plenty of women between the ages of 40-44 have children with ease. They were having their fun sans BC and BAM, their pregnant. Sitting in the doctor's office taking about, "you sure I don't have the flu". No, but your partner gave you something that sure flew inside of you
