John McCain Chooses Alaskan Governor

Forget about those Mitt-Romney-for-VP rumors. It has just been confirmed that John McCain has chosen the super-conservative, first-term Alaskan Governor, Sarah Palin, to be his vice president. On MSNBC, they're calling it "a risk" and a "swing for the fences" that will negate John McCain's argument for experience. On the other hand, it's an attempt for the McCain campaign to "match history," offer it's own barrier-breaking opportunities, and woo the women voters.

From Daily Kos:

Let's be honest: John McCain clearly wanted Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman, but he was afraid to buck his party's choice ideologues. So then they looked at Mittens, but having a baker's dozen homes wasn't looking so hot. So he figured that with Pawlenty, he might make a play for Minnesota, but that got shot down over the last week as it become increasingly obvious that Biden would wipe the floor with him in their debate.

Throw in Obama's ground-shifting speech last night, and it was clear that McCain had to throw a hail mary to just remain in the game, much less be competitive.

So we get Sarah Palin, who has a fairly compelling personal story and is an attractive woman, but has scant political experience, zero name recognition outside of political junky circles, faces an ethical investigation by her own legislature, and will now be forced to run a grueling national campaign despite having an infant child at home.

Those are the marks of desperation, and really, given his precarious electoral position, John McCain had no choice.

This is such a slick move…. The country is screaming for change and Mini-Bush is trying to prove he's different. She's 'inexperienced'…. like they accuse Obama of being, Not the 'Old white man' norm….which clearly Obama is not…. and all those crazy Hillary supporters who have gone republican instead of (God forbid) voting for Obama will be thrilled at the idea of a female on the other ticket……SOOO slick.

Man, this isht is outstanding! Are you serious? Palin!?

Your biggest trump card, your strongest attack, is calling the opponent inexperienced, too young, an outsider, and you pick a 44 year old woman who has less than 2 years experience as governor, with a scandal hanging over her head to boot?

Shoot yourself in the foot much, McCain?

Please read up on this woman. Her wikipedia page shares some interesting tidbits about the former beauty queen who had tried marijuana but "didn't like it".

Pro-lifer, anti gay marriage. Under investigation for "abuse of power" for firing her brother in law (while he and her sister were getting a divorce).

Do they think Hilary's supporters will vote for her just because she is a female and not on the issues?

Wait just a darn second; for all of you who think that Palin does not have enough experience to be VP.

Just consider this; before she was mayor of a city (population 9000) and before she was Gov. of one of the least populace states in the Union, she was a city council member!

Lmaoooooooooooooooooo!

Fox just mentioned her city council credentials, this is hilarious.

You guys,

If he had picked Clinton, it would have been a FIELD day with the media. Plus, I just don't see how he could have picked Clinton. It seems like the great choice, but it was great choice wrapped in barb wire with a bow made out of thorns.

No one ever accused the Republicans of being stupid. This is the most brilliant move of the campaign so far. Brilliant. The evangelicals are going to be so on board with this they might throw a parade in her honor. T.D. Jakes might even do a sermon about her. This is how republicans take the White House, the Congress, The Senate and America.

If Clinton had run just a little different, if Bill had decided to shut up a few more times, then we would have the Golden Ticket that everyone dreamed of having. I can't say what would have been, but I can only say what is. And this is that F-ckery!

@ Michelle:

You are so right in your last paragraph. Clinton would have been a great choice but the primary race was not so easily erased once it was over.

As all have pointed out though, Palin is NO Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is a proven strong, tough, and SMART woman. her issues and policies aligned with Obama's. Palin's do not. I am a woman and I don't vote for a woman just because she is a woman.

McCain's picking of Palin, seemingly primarily due to her gender, and Obama's not picking Hillary, points to a big personal difference between Obama and McCain.

Integrity.

Obama displays it. McCain, well, he can spell it, and that's about it. Obama didn't pick someone solely on their chromosonal makeup. I would've been disappointed in who I thought he was if he'd picked HRC after the despicable race she ran.

I wont lie. I am worried about this VP pick. I finally realised that there are certain PUMAs (hard core Clintonites) that Obama can never reach and this current VP pick is a gambit directly for that ilk. I suspect that deep down inside these PUMAs are resentful of the fact that the woman who will be sleeping with the president is a Black woman. They are used to f***ing Power, they see it as their sole right. They hate that the kids that the whole world is fawning over are a Black woman's children. They HATE it. You know the Black woman is supposed to be the perenial best friend but never the main act. With Michelle as the First Lady and Jill Biden as the 2nd everything these women thought of themselves has been swept away……Now enter the pretty cookie-cutter from Alaska. The PUMAs can claim their feminism back without owning their racism…well, well, well…Geraldine Ferraro alert.
Forget that she is running on the ticket that wants WAR WAR WAR and thinks that the economy is a-okay and doesn't care about your healthcare, at least these PUMAs will be f***ing power again and that is all that matters

If the PUMA set votes for McCain because of this, my faith in humanity would be destroyed. The only thing this woman and Hillary have in common are that they are white females in politics. This woman is EVERYTHING that Hillary is against. If Hillary won the nomination, it's the equivalent of people voting for McCain for choosing Alan Keyes as his running mate. If what they are (age, gender, race, etc.) means more than what they stand for, this country's in deep sh-t.

Politics as usual. The GOP beat Obama over the head with the inexperience stick and then McCain names her as VP. No disrespect to her as a person, but the same hypocrites who have been systematically picking apart Obama welcome this pick. I've been watching all the news stations and all I have been hearing is how great of a mother she is. Um…ok…and Obama hasn't been a great father and husband? If John McCain dies, SHE is going to be the POTUS. Politics aside, come on people. She is against abortion even in the case of INCEST & RAPE…shouldn't a woman have the right to make that decision herself. It pisses me off to hear the GOP say they are not for big government involvement, yet they want to regulate a woman's body.

Really McCain, really? For a man that locked up the Republican nomination in February and has had 6 months to think about this decision, is this the best he could do??????? He must really think that we are all gullible fools! Of all the women in the Republican universe and he chooses Alaskan Barbie! As a woman, I am insulted that he thought that this would be a viable alternative for a Hillary Clinton. Hillary is refined, super intelligent and actually knows what is going on. This lady has been totally outclassed. McShame has reacted to the Democrats decision and history making convention, this was a very rash, Bush-like move! No way. That baby is her's. We should be so lucky that it is her daughter's.

You know, if Hill had won, perhaps hard core Obamaites (read: Blacks) would not have voted for her. But there is no way in the world that they would have voted for McCain. And McCain would never have picked a Black man to be his running mate just to try and woo Black voters, never! And, if he had, Black people would have been up in arms if he had picked someone like Alan Keyes or Harold Ford, Blacks (read hard core Obamites) would have run, RUN, back to Hillary and Bill and would have hoped for the best.

Please, don't fault people for having a powerful representative…What about the mega years of 'Blacks' voting for non-Black candidates?

There are people(read:Blacks) that are staunch Republicans you know.

Your opinion is absurd, and you underestimate the character of an entire race.

The story behind the baby not being hers is gaining steam. It is pretty clear to see from videos and photographs of her during the time of her pregnancy that she was NOT with child. She's a 44 year old, thin, self professed runner. The evidence points to the child belonging to her unmarried teen daughter. But, we all know that a republican VP pick with firm family values and hard right leaning views would NEVER allow their pretty teen daughter to engage in unprotected sex and have a baby out of wedlock now would we?

Now it's reported that the daughter is 5 months pregnant, and soon to wed(?).

I imagine that within the next months, the daughter will mysteriously lose the baby, and the wedding called off! Why, because you can't be 5 months pregnant after giving birth 4 months before…

I just don't trust that party (republicans) to be honest! It's not in the character fiber of the party!

Its so funny how when her family came out her pregnant daughter was covering her stomach by holding her moms baby. They should have known it was going to come out.
